Background

The Kwara State Government said it will not accept any corpse that has no death certificate.

Health Commissioner Adul Isa, said though there has not been any reported case of the disease in the state, government was taking all necessary measures to alienate Kwara from the outbreak.

Isa told reporters in Ilorin, the state capital, that the state already has cross-border collaboration with Benin Republic to prevent the virus from entering it.

He said: “We have our disease surveillance unit in the border communities of Baruten Local Government Area, collaborating with other councils in Benin Republic. Incidentally, Benin Republic is not a high risk country.

“The state government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the disease does not spread to the state. However, several measures have been put in place to contain the disease in the unlikely event that Ebola spreads to the state.

“The state government has a Rapid Response Committee and an emergency preparedness in place. These committees have been replicated at the local government level, coordinated by the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer and focal persons at the ward level.

“All general hospitals have been sensitised and have Ebola management committees in place, comprising doctors, nurses and laboratory personnel. The state has personal protective equipment in stock and has placed orders for more.”

The statement reads: "Reports of an Ebola Disease case in Kwara State are based on rumours and should be disregarded. There is no confirmed case in Kwara State. Meanwhile, government has put all necessary measures in place to protect the public against this scourge."

BREAKING NEWS: Kwara Government Isolates Suspected Ebola patients
The Kwara State Government said today that it has isolated some patients suspected to have contracted the dreaded Ebola virus in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
Making the announcement on his twitter handle, monitored by e-kwara.com today, the Kwara Commissioner for Information, Mr. Tunji Morounfoye, said that the suspected case had yet to be confirmed.
“We are still awaiting results of the tests carried out on the patients who are currently isolated. They came in from Lagos,” he said
e-Kwara investigations reveal that the suspected Ebola patients came from Lagos State Tuesday and lodged at a popular hospital (name withheld) along Olorunshogo area of Ilorin.
A source at the hospital informed e-kwara under a strict condition of anonymity that the patient is a toddler that was vomiting and stoolling uncontrollably.
The hospital management was said to have alerted the Kwara Ministry of Health over the suspected case.
It is not yet clear what the Kwara Government is doing to douse building tension in the metropolis.
This medium however learnt that Mr. Morounfoye may address the media in few minutes over the public alert and the panic it had so far generated.
Meanwhile, a former senator and first daughter of the late strongman of Ilorin politics, Sen. Gbemisola Saraki, has bemoaned government’s negligence over the virus. She said that the Kwara State Government should not have waited for the PDP to awaken it to its responsibility before it acted.
She stated this today in a post on her facebook timeline. She said she was sad that the Kwara government was defaulting of its basic responsibility of sensitizing the public on the dreaded virus.
“What does it take the government to go to the streets, to the churches and the mosques and sensitize the people? How long does it take the government to act? Is it after the PDP has woken it to the danger posed by the virus? I am sad beyond words?”
“On a personal note, I am embarking on a street-by-street sensitization of especially women and children. They are the most vulnerable and we should stop at nothing to get them duly informed,” she said.
