Yolo County suffered its first death from the novel H1N1 influenza strain with the loss of Esparto resident Stacey Speegle-Hernandez. On Aug. 7, after contracting the flu, the 30-year-old mother of two caught pneumonia and died at Woodland Memorial Hospital. The Sacramento County public health media office said that as of Aug. 18 six had died of H1N1, with about 84 hospitalizations. More cases of H1N1 were reported in Yolo County's Madison on Aug. 13. Roman Figueroa, 26, was hospitalized with the virus.

School officials confirmed this week that a student at Creekside Middle School was diagnosed with the H1N1 virus, commonly known as the swine flu.
The girl was diagnosed with the swine flu Tuesday, Aug. 18, according to Dave Hodge, the Patterson Joint Unified School District’s director of special education and the manager of its nursing staff.
Hodge said there is also one unconfirmed case at Apricot Valley Elementary School. The district received notice from that student’s parents but was trying to confirm with the doctor as of Wednesday, Aug. 19...

"A 52-year-old Washington woman died Sunday from swine flu at a Redding hospital, the first north state death from the virus that public health officials are calling a global pandemic.
But public health officials, who announced the death Thursday, are keeping the woman's identity and the hospital in which she died a secret.
The woman first was hospitalized Aug. 4 in Siskiyou County and was transferred to Redding after she tested positive for the H1N1 virus, Siskiyou County Public Health officials announced in a statement Thursday..."

Swine flu on rise in Nevada County; up to 17 confirmed cases
Friday, August 21, 2009
By Liz Kellar
Sun News Service
GRASS VALLEY, Calif. — At the beginning of July, Nevada County reported its first confirmed case of H1N1, or swine flu. At the time, Nevada County Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Milman predicted more cases and expressed surprise it had taken so long for the virus to spread to the region.

By early August, the number of confirmed cases had jumped to five; it now stands at 17 confirmed cases and two probable cases.

For Mt. Diablo school board trustee Sherry Whitmarsh, the message to be vigilant about the spread of swine flu couldn't be more clear.
Whitmarsh's 11-year-old daughter, Ariana, was diagnosed with the dangerous H1N1 flu strain Sunday, after attending a weeklong summer camp, then playing in a weekend soccer tournament in San Luis Obispo.
And Whitmarsh herself also may have contracted the virus.
"I had a cough," Ariana said Wednesday, as she leaned against her mother. "My ears hurt. My stomach hurt. My nose and head were congested and my throat was sore."...
When the family returned home Sunday afternoon, the girl's fever measured 103.5, according to their home thermometer. Alarmed, Whitmarsh rushed Ariana to a doctor and learned that the fever was actually 105.3.
"When I found out her fever was so high, that's when I freaked," Whitmarsh recalled. "Ariana looked at me and said, 'Is that high?'"...
Six people in Contra Costa County, including a 9-year-old Concord girl, have died after contracting the virus. But Ariana made a quick recovery after taking Tamiflu.
Still, Whitmarsh was annoyed to learn that her insurance company would not cover the $90 cost of the flu medication for patients under 13...
She has notified the pastor of her church about Ariana's illness, because about 30 kids from the congregation attended the five-day Christian Camp in King's Canyon. No other children from the camp or from Ariana's soccer team have reported being sick, Whitmarsh said.
When Whitmarsh told Oak Grove Middle School officials that Ariana had been sick with H1N1, she was surprised they were unsure whether it was safe for the girl to start classes Aug. 31. Health officials had said people should stay home for one week, but now say it is OK to leave home 24 hours after a fever goes away without the use of medication...
