The Kentucky Department for Public Health reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that the flu activity level in the state has increased to regional, the second highest level of flu activity. The activity levels for states are tracked weekly as part of the CDC’s national flu surveillance system.

We continued to detect cases of novel H1N1 over the summer at a reduced rate of transmission. As anticipated, we are now seeing an increase in cases of H1N1 around the state with the return of students to school,” said William Hacker, M.D., commissioner of DPH. “We want to remind Kentuckians to stay aware of new developments related to the flu and to focus on practicing good health habits.”

The CDC has told states to expect an increase in the number of cases of the H1N1 flu strain first identified in the spring, and which has since been declared a worldwide pandemic.

So if it is expected why didn't you do something about it?

State Medical Reserve Corps here to help with swine flu, other medical emergencies

As more diagnosed cases of the H1N1 virus increase across Kentucky, nearly every local health department has some extra hands prepared to help.

Kentucky has some 3,400 members in the Medical Reserve Corps, a group of medical professionals and other volunteers who are trained to step up in a medical emergency.

"We are going to need a lot of people to help," with the mass immunizations that are in the works, said April Thomas, public health coordinator with the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department. "These volunteers are going to be very, very important."

For other information, call your local health department.

The Kentucky corps has the distinction of being the only one in the country to have been activated twice within the last year, said Rebecca Gillis, the state's branch manager for public health preparedness.

Volunteers staffed an emergency medical shelter in Louisville to handle some 1,500 evacuees when Hurricane Gustav blew through Louisiana in 2008, and they helped local health department staffs during last winter's ice storm.

A quick decision to close every school in McCreary County came Sunday night, after a 9 year old was taken to a Somerset Hospital. Doctors soon learned the girl's condition was every serious.
“(They) ran a few tests, some diagnosis, and decided to fly the girl to UK (Medical Center),” said McCreary County Superintendent Arthur Wright on Monday.
Wright said the girl attended Pine Knot Primary...which has grades Kindergarten through 3rd grades. Wright says when schools were closed they didn't know what was wrong with the girl.
“Some of it… they said was flu like symptoms,” said Wright.
It's since been confirmed the girl did not have meningitis as first feared. Instead..she has a condition known as encephalitis.

Murray State
Swine flu suspected on campus

As of Wednesday, five of Kentucky’s eight public universities have confirmed cases of the virus.
Because of the spreading threat of the novel strain of influenza A, Burgess said Murray State’s efforts have become necessary to ensure the safety of the Murray State community.
“We’ve supplied each building with hand sanitizers and Clorox wipes,” Burgess said. “We’ve also provided forehead thermometers that you stick to your forehead and it takes the temperature.”
He said the Housing office has provided desk workers in the residential colleges with antibacterial wipes to sanitize commonly touched items like elevator buttons, phones and the general front desk area.

In the Henderson County School District, officials are confirming several cases of what they're calling type-A flu cases, believed to be the H1N1 virus.
About a dozen students and staff are infected and being told to stay home.
School officials said the infected students and staff belong to six out of the district's 12 schools, but they are not saying which schools.
