Brian W Buck's death was due to an accident -- not illness.

Lusby man killed by fallen tree

A Lusby man was killed Saturday when he and two other people were cutting up a large tree at a home on Rousby Hall Road.

Brian W. Buck, 50, was cutting up a downed tree when a large log rolled into the hole left by the tree’s root ball, according to a press release from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office. Witnesses told police that Buck climbed into the hole to get the log when the root ball became dislodged and fell back into the hole, trapping Buck, the release said.

My condolences to the family. They are certainly going through trying times.

Correct, but aunt died March 1 and children developed symptoms on February 28 and died in early March, so the level of H3 circulating at the March 3 funeral would have been significant, as was the March 7 hospitalization date for the sister (who had fever and cough when hospitalized) of the index case.

5th Calvert family member at hospital

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/ ... story.html

A fifth member of the Calvert County family stricken by serious lung infections and complications of flu is at MedStar Washington Hospital Center for evaluation, a spokeswoman said Wednesday. Three family members have died in the past week.

The newest person to come under medical attention is the sister of Lou Ruth Blake, 81. Blake died at her home in Lusby on March 1. The sister has a fever but does not appear to have other flulike symptoms, the spokeswoman said.

More disinformation. The sister was hospitalized with fever and a COUGH, which is a FLULIKE symptom. Moreover, she was hospitalized within a few days of her nephew's funeral on March 3 when and where the level of H3 in circulation was likely to have been significant.

Yes, in one of the videos a family member noted that the size of the family was large (and more cases are likely).

The family members would have had two opportunities to be exposed. First at the nephew's funeral and then one of the other family members was also buried.
The link above is to the funeral home website.

Visitation:
AS OF 3/5/2012 ALL VISITATIONS AND FUNERAL SERVICES HAVE BEEN POSTPONED.

I believe the above notice was linked to the funeral of the index case, who died March 1 and was likely the case who was embalmed and not tested further. She developed symptoms on March 23. One of her children (the only survivor) lived with her, while the two that came to help developed symptoms on or about February 28 and died in early March (one died March 5). Thus, I am not sure if any infected cases have been buried yet. One was sent to Baltimore for autopsy.

WASHINGTON - Crews dressed in hazmat suits entering a house may look alarming, but to Ashley Long, the place is grandma's house.

"My grandmother was a very special lady to me,” said Long. "She helped my mom raise me and take care of me.”

Her 81-year-old grandmother Ruth Blake died at the home on March 1. She was suffering from a severe respiratory illness.

"She had started getting sick and the family was coming around to take care of her," said Long. "Around that time, we didn't think it was that serious. But as a family, we all pitched in to help take care of my grandmother."

Now, two of those in the family who helped are also gone. Long’s 58-year-old uncle and her 56-year-old aunt got sick and died.

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene confirms the siblings had Influenza H3, a strain of Influenza A.

Long's mother lived at the house and was the primary caregiver when her grandmother got sick. She is recovering in the hospital.

The Calvert County Health Department and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene are continuing to investigate.

"Given that the three children who were taking care of their mom got sick within three or four days after they came in contact with her, you would think that if other people were going to get sick from having come into contact with these people, it would have been apparent by now," said Dr. David Rogers of the Calvert County Health Department.

More disinformation. The funeral for the nephew was March 3, so like the aunt who was hospitalized on March 7, many would just have mild symptoms (she had fever and cough). Moreover, the hospitalization of the aunt indicates the transmission chain is still acive.

Maryland’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner also is conducting autopsies as part of the investigation. Medical Examiner David Fowler said Calvert health officials contacted his office Monday seeking assistance. One of the bodies was being transported to Baltimore on Tuesday for an autopsy. At least one of the bodies had already been embalmed and buried, local officials told him.

Thanks for the clarification. The number of opportunities for the H3 spread is large and several of the opportunities have happened since the March 3 funeral.
