Carbon Monoxide poisoning? REALLY? I figured some "expert" would toss that one out there. Carbon monoxide poisoning is easily diagnosed, (Usually in the E.R) Carbon Monoxide poisoning doesn't make people "cough blood". The CDC wouldn't be involved if it was Carbon monoxide poisoning.

These victims already tested positive for influenza A (according to the initial article) and now experts from other places in the country are just tossing out speculation, they're trying to confuse the media.

The media report was published yesterday, but it made little since then either because of the gap in disease onset dates between the index case and family members.

Update on Calvert County Respiratory Illness Investigation

Preliminary Testing Indicates Influenza

Dori Henry
Director of Communications
Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

BALTIMORE (March 6, 2012) – The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) is working in conjunction with the Calvert County Health Department to investigate a cluster of respiratory illnesses in Calvert County. As the Calvert County Health Department has reported, DHMH is aware of four cases in adults from a single family with severe respiratory illness; three have died. At this time, no other similar clusters have been reported from Calvert County or elsewhere in the state.

The cause for these illnesses is under investigation and testing is being conducted by the DHMH Laboratories Administration. Preliminary testing at the DHMH Laboratories Administration indicates that two of the fatal cases had influenza, and these cases may have been complicated by bacterial co-infections. Bacterial co-infection is a known complication of influenza infection. Additional testing is being conducted for all cases.

DHMH recommends all individuals continue to take the following precautions during influenza season: hand washing, staying home if sick, and staying up to date with influenza vaccinations. DHMH also reminds Maryland residents with influenza-like illness (fever and sore throat or cough) to consult their healthcare providers for evaluation. DHMH is not recommending any additional measures at this time. The Department will provide additional updates as more information becomes available.

There have been no new cases reported as of 10:00 p.m.

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. - A deadly outbreak of flu appears to have killed three people in Calvert County, all from the same family. The Calvert County Health Department began investigating the cluster of deaths on Monday trying to find the source of this outbreak.

The first victim was an 81-year-old Lusby woman who got sick less than two weeks ago and died. Her son and two daughters, all in their 50s, were taking care of her when they got sick too. Within days, those two were dead.

"I just couldn't believe all of this was going on in my aunt's house,” said Carl Lockes, who identified the elderly victim as his aunt Ruth Blake. “I don't know if it's something in the house or coming in contact with a germ or something."

Doctors at Washington Hospital Center now say the son and daughter who died were infected with influenza A. Lab tests are also being done on the mother to see if she was infected by the same flu virus.

On Tuesday morning, a team of environmental health specialists scoured the victim's home on Rousby Hall Road. Calvert County health officials believe the outbreak was isolated to the house and those in close contact with the elderly victim who lived there.

Lockes said at first it seemed like a cold, and then suddenly they died. He identified the other victims as Lowell and Vanessa Blake, with their sister Elaine as the sole survivor. Relatives say she is improving and that her breathing tube was removed on Tuesday.

"We got a large family. Everybody's concerned about what's going on. It's been very tragic for the family," said Lockes.

The health department has warned doctors in the county to be aware of anyone reporting respiratory illnesses. The school system also notified parents to be aware and to call their doctors if they notice similar flu like symptoms.

County health officials called the flu strain very virulent, with an incubation period of just two to three days, but don't believe the outbreak poses a greater public health risk. No other similar cases have been reported.

"I know there was concern this may be an infection spreading in the community, house-to-house, children involved. That is not the case. We have no evidence at this point any individual other than these four people have been affected," said Dr. David Rogers, a Calvert County Health Officer.

The health department is keeping an eye on relatives and hospital staff or others who came in close contact with the victims, but say no one else has gotten sick so far.

Still, the health department says a few more days will need to pass before they can declare that this outbreak has passed.

Medstar Washington Hospital Center reports the son and daughter who died in the hospital had Influenza A. They also had other medical conditions, officials say.

The 81-year-old mother's cause of death is still under investigation.

The health of the other daughter (and fourth victim) is improving, hospital officials say.

Fell ill: Lou Ruth Blake, 81, died five days before two of her children who were taking care of her

Mysterious flu strain nearly wipes out family as two siblings die taking care of sickened mother... and the third sibling remains deathly ill

A mysterious flu strain nearly wiped out a family, killing an 81-year-old woman and two of her children who were taking care of her. A third sibling remains deathly ill.
Lou Ruth Blake took sick with a respiratory infection February 23 and her son and two daughters rushed to her home in rural Lusby, Maryland.

Five days later, her children all came down with similar symptoms, likely tied to a particularly virulent bout of the flu.

Suit up: CDC and state health officials took no chances searching the home where four people caught a deadly strain of flu

But there were further complications. When Ms Blake's three children went to the hospital, they were coughing up blood and showed signs of a staph bacterial infections, as well, the Washington Post reported.
Ms Blake died March 1 at MedStar Washington Hospital Center after being treated for Influenza A and underlying medical conditions.

Her son Lowell, 58, and her daughter Vanessa, 56, died Monday -- five days after their mother -- after they were hospitalized with the same virulent flu strain, as well.

Ms Blake's second daughter, age 51, is currently in critical condition with the same collection of symptoms -- a deadly respiratory infection caused by Influenza A and a staph infection.
On Tuesday, officials from the Maryland Department of Health and the federal Centers for Disease Control wearing full containment suits -- complete with air tanks so they wouldn't breathe the air -- searched the house for clues about what might have made the flu so potent.

Dr William Schaffner, chair of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, told ABC News a traditional flu virus might have mutated when Ms Blake caught it into an enhanced version of the deadly 'Swine Flu' from two years ago.

WUSA-TV the strain seems to be contained to only Ms Blake's family who stayed at her house.

There is no reason to believe anyone else could contract that particular flu virus, he added.
Officials with the CDC will conduct autopsies to determine exactly which strain of the flu virus killed the family.
