So if this spreads south this upcoming winter then our vax for Australia may not be of much use?

Correct. Perth/16-like vaccines for the protection of seasonal H3N2 (or H3N2v) are HISTORY (although it is far from clear if the LOW REACTORS that have exploded in the United States are seasonal H3N2 or H3N2v.

Thanks. Vax is one step behind again.

Is there some good news though?

These new H3N2 variants don't seem to be a killer, have D225G etc.

Also older folk may have some immunity?

These new H3N2 variants don't seem to be a killer, have D225G etc.

Also older folk may have some immunity?

The relationship between the LOW REACTORS and Perth/16 remains unclear, but whatever is being tested has increased dramatically in recent weeks. If it is H3N2v, then a new pandemic has begun because H3N2 is dominant at this time and the LOW REACTORS are dominant within H3N2 (so there are 10s if not 100s of thousands of current cases in the US alone).

Testing to date on H3N2v has been VERY limited. Intial testing of H1N1pdm09 in the US in the spring of 2009 was very mild (including 150 students at the high school in Queens, NY), yet young adults were dying in Mexico, and H1N1pdm09 went on to kill record numbers of children in the US and worldwide.

H3N2v spreading widely in humans would create a VERY unstable situations in humans, pigs, and a host of other mammals and the effect of D225G could become dramatically different than results recorded for the 20 human cases reported to date in the US since the summer of 2009.

No. ALL H3N2v cases in US have D225G.

Thanks. Has the USA flu death rate gone up recently? Is H3N2v more lethal with D225G?

Each post is a list of sequences which have the marker at the top of the list. Isolates in red are recent seasonal H3N2 sequences (generally 2010-2012 - plus a few from 2009). Those in black are human variants or the two swine H3N2v sequences matching 2011 human H3N2v isolates.

More examples in latest 2012 sequences released by CDC.
