Comparision of H3N2v vaccine to rare avian viruses is nonsense. H3N2v is a continuation of H1N1pdm09 and the H3N2v pandemic began in 2011.

Hmmm ... well, that makes more sense then. Because when you read this:

You can't help but wonder WHY are they ordering a 'precautionary vaccine' against a virus that only "sickened 12 people in 5 states since July". Which is what probably just about EVERY person who reads that news report would think, and of course then think more hyperbole about flu.

It certainly seems so. Also, if the virus is as mild as they say and it doesn't affect the typical at-risk groups (elderly, small children, and those that are immunocompromised), then why bother with a vaccine at all?

This brings to mind the most memorable line from the movie Contagion "We don't want anyone to know until everyone knows."

Last entries were cases from Maine in October. The following cases have yet to be reported:

Iowa/08/2011 (November) H3N2pdm11 (H3N2v)
Iowa/09/2011 (November) H3N2pdm11 (H3N2v)

Minnesota/19/2011 (December) trH1N2 (H1N2v)

IHR regulations require reporting within 48 hours of lab confirmation. All of the above (with the possible exception of Northern California) have been lab confirmed (and likely reported to the WHO website on notifiable diseases), but the lag in CDC MMWR reporting remains curious.

Tomorrow's MMWR also has week 52 update, which also does NOT update data on novel infleunza cases in 2011

Week 3 of 2012 still has not update 2011 data on H3N2v, H1N2v, H1N1v. Only 6 of the 14 cases infected in 2011 are listed. Last case was the second Maine case in October. No listing for vet in Indiana (new vaccine target), cluster in Iowa, cluster in West Virginia, H1N2v in Minnesota, H1N1, in Wisconsin.
