Queensland has recorded a significant spike in its influenza infection rate, which has increased from about 71 to 229 cases per 100,000 people.

The new figures are drawn from the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System compiled by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing.

It monitors a string of diseases, ranging from sexually-transmitted infections to illnesses that can be prevented if people are vaccinated....
