As can be seen from the sequences of isolates most closely related to the Hubei or Hong Kong cases, both are closely related to wild bird sequences, which are typically clade 2.3.2.1 in southern China Hong Kong, where wild bird H5N1 is identified every year in wild birds between December and February.

Neither H5N1 sequence from last year had H274Y (they were sensitive to Tamiflu).

Guangdong authorities said yesterday they were unsure whether the death of a bird flu victim in Shenzhen was related to migratory birds, changing their tone a day after they described a wetland park visited by the victim as "highly suspicious"....

The Health Ministry is closely monitoring developments after a man died on Saturday of bird flu (Influenza A HN51 virus) in Shenzhen, China -- the country's first reported human case in 18 months.
Health director-general Datuk Seri Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman said yesterday it was not yet known how the 39-year-old man contracted the disease. But he said the public need not worry as the death was considered an isolated case, with no reports of infection among 120 of the man's closest contacts so far.

"So far, no cases of human-to-human transmission (of bird flu) has been detected. The Chinese authorities have also taken steps to contain its spread."

He said the last case of bird flu in China among humans was reported in June 2010, involving a woman who had close contact with live poultry infected with the H5N1 virus.

He urged the public not to touch dead poultry without protective equipment and to report all unusual cases of poultry deaths to their nearest veterinary office.

He said as of Dec 15 last year, the World Health Organisation had recorded 57 cases (and 30 deaths) among humans in four countries, namely: Egypt (36 cases, 13 deaths), Cambodia (8 cases, 8 deaths), Indonesia (11 cases, 9 deaths) and Bangladesh (2 cases, no death).

He added that all 1,600 H5N1 tests on poultry samples nationwide throughout the past year had produced a negative result.

A Chinese bus driver who tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus died Saturday in a city bordering Hong Kong, health officials said, in the country’s first reported case of the disease in humans in 18 months.

The man surnamed Chen died in the wealthy southern city of Shenzhen, provincial health officials said. Shenzhen is separated by a small river from Hong Kong, where thousands of birds have been slaughtered after two were confirmed to have the virus last week.

inShare..During the month prior to his fever, Chen, 39, apparently had no direct contact with poultry and did not travel out of Shenzhen, a metropolis of 10 million people.

H5N1 rarely infects humans and usually only those who come into close contact with diseased poultry. But among those infected, nearly 60 percent die, and scientists are closely watching the virus for any signs it is becoming more easily transmissible from human to human.

Chen developed a fever on Dec. 21 and was hospitalized on Dec. 25, city and provincial authorities said in a statement. Health Ministry experts confirmed on Saturday that he was infected with H5N1, the provincial health department said.

The Guangdong health department also said 120 people who had close contact with Chen have not developed any abnormal symptoms.

The Ministry of Health has informed the World Health Organization about the case, local authorities said.

WHO says globally there have been 336 human deaths from 573 confirmed bird flu cases since 2003. Of these, 40 cases were in China, 26 of which were fatal.

Chen’s death comes a week after two dead birds tested positive for the virus in Hong Kong.

More than 19,000 birds at a Hong Kong market were slaughtered and imports and sales of live poultry were banned for three weeks after a chicken carcass tested positive for H5N1. Lab tests later confirmed that an Oriental magpie robin found dead on Dec. 17 was also infected.

China’s last reported human case of H5N1 was in June 2010. A pregnant 22-year-old woman from central Hubei province died after being exposed to sick and dead poultry.

A bus driver in southern China's Guangdong province has died of bird flu, a week after being admitted to hospital with a fever.

The 39-year-old man living in Shenzhen, just across the border from Hong Kong, developed symptoms on 21 December and was admitted to a hospital four days later because of severe pneumonia, the official Xinhua news agency reported. He died in the early afternoon on Saturday of multiple organ failure, having tested positive for H5N1.

About 10 days ago Hong Kong culled 17,000 chickens at a wholesale poultry market and suspended all imports of live chickens from mainland China for 21 days after a dead chicken there tested positive for the H5N1 virus.

The virus normally affects birds but can jump to people. The H5N1 strain is highly pathogenic, kills most species of birds and up to 60 per cent of the people it infects.

HONG KONG—Hong Kong authorities late on Saturday suspended imports of live poultry and poultry products from parts of neighboring Shenzhen after a man there died from a lethal strain of avian influenza.

The import ban, which is to last 21 days, comes as the city's government remains on high alert as the bird flu strain known as H5N1 has resurfaced in recent weeks.

SHENZHEN, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Health authorities in south China's Guangdong province have identified the virus that led to the death of a local bus driver, although the source of the virus remains unclear, a local disease control center said Monday.

The highly pathogenic H5N1 virus is carried by poultry and birds, according to a statement released by the Shenzhen Disease Control Center.

Genetic analysis of the virus has indicated that it is similar to a virus found in dead migrant birds in a 2011 avian influenza outbreak in Hong Kong. However, it is not known if the case in Guangdong is related to migrant birds, the center said.

A 39-year-old man surnamed Chen from the Bao'an district of Shenzhen was hospitalized for a fever on Dec. 21 and tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus. Chen died of multiple organ failure Saturday afternoon.

Poultry and migrant birds are the only vectors for human H5N1 infection, according to He Jianfeng, director of the Epidemics Studies Institute of the Guangdong Disease Control Center.

However, He said that there is no clear evidence that Chen had close contact with poultry or migrant birds. Health authorities are still working to figure out where and when Chen acquired the virus.

Although it is highly pathogenic, the virus cannot be spread from person-to-person contact, the center said in a previous statement, adding that there is no need for people to panic.

The Guangdong Department of Agriculture also announced on Saturday that no epidemics of avian flu among poultry have been reported in the province.
