Denpasar, Indonesia - Two children have died of bird flu on Indonesia's resort island of Bali, hospital staff said Monday.

Wayan Aldiawan, 10, and his 5-year-old sister Nengah Rika Ani died Sunday after being treated for two days, Sanglah hospital official Elzarita Arbain said.

'Throat swabs and blood samples came back positive for H5N1,' he said, referring to the deadliest strain of bird flu.

The chief of the hospital's bird flu ward, Ken Wirasandi, said the children had contact with dead fowl in their neighbourhood in Bangli district.

Before the latest cases, two people died of bird flu in Bali between 2007-08.

According to the World Health Organization, Indonesia has had 146 human deaths from bird flu, the highest in the world.

Bird Flu Spreads to 8 of 9 Bali Districts; Lombok on Edge Over Poultry Deaths

http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/home/bir ... ths/471804

Denpasar/Mataram. Health authorities in Bali said on Friday that the bird flu virus that killed two children there last week had spread to eight of nine districts on the island, while residents in neighboring Lombok are reporting similar chicken deaths.

Putu Sumantra, head of the Bali Livestock Agency, said that only Gianyar district had not reported cases of poultry dying from the disease.

“This is quite surprising, especially given how quickly the disease is spreading,” he said.

He added that the pattern of the spread of the disease was similar, although smaller in scale, to 2007, when a bird flu pandemic swept the island.

“Back then, around 4,000 birds died, but this time the figure is much smaller,” Sumantra said. “Nevertheless, the deaths of the two children is a very shocking thing to come to terms with.”

Almost 2,800 birds are confirmed to have contracted avian influenza. More than 1,300 died from the disease and a further 1,200 were culled.

“Most of the cases occurred in poultry raised on small farms,” Sumantra said. “Those on larger commercial farms tend to be vaccinated on a regular basis so aren’t as vulnerable.”

Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana, a member of the provincial legislature, expressed concern that the spread of the disease would hurt the island’s all-important tourism industry.

He also said it came at a particularly critical time, with US President Barack Obama among the clutch of world leaders scheduled to arrive in Bali for the East Asia Summit.

Two people suspected to have contracted the H5N1 strain of avian influenza are being treated at West Nusa Tenggara General Hospital in Mataram.

The two patients were identified as 11-month-old Muhammad Aditya from Praya in West Lombok district and 53-year-old Inaq Sahnun from Pringgarata in Central Lombok district.

Mentari, Sahnun’s daughter-in-law, said that two days earlier Sahnun began running a fever, had a cough and shortness of breath. She was taken to a hospital in Praya where she was placed under observation for two hours before being sent to Mataram for suspected bird flu.

“The doctor at Praya suspected [Sahnun] had contracted bird flu, but said further tests were needed,” Mentari said.

Sahnun’s house is located in an avian influenza-endemic area, where more than 400 chickens were reported to have died suddenly. Preliminary findings suggest the cause of death may have been bird flu.

Sahwan, the father of Aditya, the other patient, said his son had been running a fever for two days. He said he brought Aditya to a public heath center in Pringgarata before taking him to Mataram.

Sahan, the infant’s grandmother, said he often played with the around 100 chickens that the family raised at their house. Twenty of the chickens died suddenly in the past week, also suspected to be from bird flu.

“Besides, Aditya’s father’s chickens, many of the neighbors’ chickens are also dying, even today,” she said. “Hundreds have already died in that area.”

Sahan added that Sahwan was a temporary worker with the local livestock agency and had in recent weeks been helping spray disinfectant in chicken pens and educating residents on how to respond to a suspected bird flu outbreak.

“He explained to them that they should bury or incinerate the dead poultry, but many residents continue to just dump the dead birds in open drains,” she said.

The two patients were brought to the hospital on Saturday afternoon and have been isolated from other patients. Aditya, however, was accompanied in his room by his mother, who wore a face mask.

Both Aditya and Sahnun have been put on intravenous drips as doctors await the arrival of a special team dealing with human bird flu cases.

There has been a sudden increase in the number of poultry dying unexpectedly in Lombok in the past fortnight, with thousands reported dead in Central Lombok district and Mataram.

The spike comes as the neighboring resort island of Bali also grapples with a surge in poultry deaths attributed to bird flu. Two children were confirmed to have died from the disease there earlier this month.

not a great google translation. The gist of it says that the mother of the two children who died of bird flu, and who is hospitalized for symptoms herself, tried to leave the hospital. She would rather be treated by the shaman than at the hospital where her two children died. Her platelet levels decreased dramatically and they are still waiting on bloodwork for a diagnosis.

Latest WHO confirmed cases in Indonesia do not include Bali cases:

10 October 2011 -The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced a confirmed case of human infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus.

The case is an 1-year old female from West Jakarta district, DKI Jakarta Province. She developed symptoms and was treated at a health care facility on 8 August, and first admitted to a private hospital on 15 August. She died on 25 August.

A family member in the case’s household works as a caterer, frequently processing poultry product, including slaughtering. There were also poultry in the neighbourhood but there were no reports of chicken deaths within the last 14 days.

Laboratory tests have confirmed infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus.

Of the 179 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 147 have been fatal.

Mataram – Two bird flu (H5N1) suspect patients from Lombok Tengah regency were referred to West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) provincial hospital, Saturday (15/10). Previously, bird flu H5N1 was reported to have attacked hundreds of chickens in several sub-districts in Lombok Tengah and Mataram.

The other is a 53-year-old female with initial IS, a resident of Pringgarata village, Pringgarata sub-district, Lombok Tengah.

Note the long delay between date of death (August 15) and acknowledgment by Indonesia / WHO (October 10), which does not comply with IHR which requires reporting within 48 hours of lab confirmation.
