The CDC FluView continues to issue a weekly report, even though it is not flu season. Although the underlying data on sub-types can change due to updates, the latest data shows an increase in H3 cases (3 in each of the past 3 weeks), as well as one unsubtypable in week 33 (the only unsubtypable reported for the past 46 weeks).

These increases may reflect a low level of detection of trH3N2.

Latest data for the past 10 weeks:

25 0 0 0 0 0 2 1666 0.12
26 0 2 0 0 1 1 1281 0.31
27 0 2 1 0 1 1 1232 0.41

It is worth noting that the reporting of an unsubtypable by the CDC is EXTREMELY rare. Although trH3N2 isolates have human H3 and N2, the genes are from the 1990's and have extensively evolved in swine in the past 15 years. This evolution could produce an unsubtypable (unable to subtype) result. Most trH3N2 however, will type as seasonal H3N2 because of the jump of seasonal H3N2 into swine in the 1990's and the human lineage of the H3 and N2 in trH3N2.

In Australia type A influenza is dominated by swine H1N1. In the past 3 weeks, the CDC is reporting one H1N1 and 9 H3N2, raising concerns than some or most of the H3N2 isolates are trH3N2.

Prior to this weekend, the CDC has not reported an unsubtypable since the 2009 H1N1 pandemic

The unsubtypable sample from week 33 is probably the trH3n2 case from Pennsylvania (see new thread at link below)
