In total 78 people have been hospitalised with swine flu (H1N1) of whom 14 have been in intensive care, the Telegraaf quotes the health and environment institution RIVM as saying.

The death toll in the Netherlands remains at two.

According to a new survey by pollster Maurice de Hond, one in four people in the country know someone who has become ill.

De Hond says this would mean between 1.5% and 2% of the population is currently ill with the virus - a total of up to 250,000 people. This is twice the infection rate estimated three weeks ago.

In the last week 24 patients were admited to the hospital with lab confirmed with new influenza A (H1N1). No new deaths were reported.

In total, until october 14, a total of 151 patients were in the hospital, including the 4 deaths. 64% of these patients had underlying medical conditions.

The breakdown of the number of hospital admissions per day sees an increase.

Last week includes 4 patiens in the intensive care units. A total of 23 patients required/were in intensive care. Of these, 16 required mechanical ventilation and 57% of these patients had underlying medical conditions. The age distribution is spread evenly across all age categories. 5 of the 23 patients were childeren (<15 years).

95% of the National Influenza Center for week 28 tested samples where of type A (H1N1)v.

There are no reported cases of resistence to oseltamivir and zanamivir.

Teh number of patients with influenza-like-ilness symptoms that are visiting the GP in the last week increased slightly. It is estimated that the amount of persons with ILI symptoms are at 6.9 per 10,000. In 5 of the 33 samples (15%) new influenza A (h1N1) was found. The indication of pneumonia was 1.4 per 10,000.

Within the nursing infection diseases network (SNIV) no further increase of ILI ilness is seen. There is no increase in pneumonia among nursing home residents.

In the week ending on Wednesday, october 7, 2009 there is increase seen in the mortality.

Conlusion:

In the last week the hospitalizations with confirmed new influenza A (h1n1) has doubled compared to last week. There were 54 patients reported this period. 2 new deaths were also reported, a 14 year old female and a 40 year old man.

The age distrubition of those patients hospitalized with confirmed new influenza A shows that these patients are mostly younger than 65 years. There is a peak in the age group of 9 to 4 years. In the previous weeks this peak was between the ages 15 to 24.

In total, until october 21, 205 patients were hospitalized and 6 patients died. 61% of those hospitalized (including fatal cases) had underlying medical conditions.

The number of patients with flu-like symptoms that visited the GP during the last week increased. The incidence of influenza-like ilness in the past week was 7.6 per 10,000 inhabitants. In 13 of the 40 samples (32,5%) influenza A (H1N1) was found. The incidence of pneumonia was 1.1 per 10,000 inhabitants.

7 patients had to be admitted to intensive care units in the last week. A total of 31 patients are/have been in the intensive care. Of these patients, 21 persons required mechanical ventilation and 58.1% of the patients had underlying medical conditions. The age distribution shows a peak in the age group of 5 to 14 years.

95% of the National Influenza Center for week 28 sampled viruses were of type A (H1N1)v.

No resistence to oseltamivir or zanamivir have been reported.

Within the Nursing Infectious Deseases Surveilance Network (SNIV) no further increase in the incidence of Influenza like ilnesses were reported. There is no increase in pneumonia among nursing home residents.

In the week ending on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 there is no increase in the total mortality and mortality by age.

2 deaths confirmed by rivm. upgrade to light epidemic.

The spread of H1N1 in the Netherlands has increased again in the previous week. It is now a light flu epidemic.
In the last week 10 people per day where hospitalized with H1N1
This week 2 persons died due to an infection with the H1N1 virus.

De person which have died are a 40 year old man and a 14 year old girl.
In total 6 persons in the Netherlands have died caused by H1N1.

The man has had other illnesses, but the girl was healthy before the flu.

Probable (rapid) flu death of 16 year old
Original: 16 year old dies of 'flu'
Google translate: 16 year old dies of 'flu'

The length of illness is surprisingly short, onset of symptoms on sunday; died on tuesday morning. Sad story.

According to the articles that I found the length of the illness was actually shorter: she became ill on Sunday and died THE NEXT DAY in the Rotterdam Erasmus Medical Center.
Link: http://www.transport-online.nl/site/alg ... p?news=808

This article furthermore states that the GGD (a Dutch Health Organization) may come with a confirmation about this illness being H1N1 later today.
The girl seemed very fit and had (presumably) no other underlying health condition.
If it becomes clear that the illness was indeed H1N1 then this must have been a very agressive case. All in all another very sad story :(

It also makes me wonder about the logic behind the vaccination scheme in the Netherlands. Why only vaccinate the so called High Risk Groups and not the young people (students!)? Aren't they the ones that have a high risk of catching (and spreading) it or do we define "risk" as the chance of developing complications or even dying from the disease? If so then we are doing a bad job. There are 6 confirmed deaths linked to H1N1 in the Netherlands and, if this 16 year old girl had H1N1, there are now 7 and that would mean that in the last week 2 young, seemingly healthy girls died of complications. Statistically it doesn't add up.... does it?

There is confirmation in a sense, it was not H1N1. So no connections here.

This was in the news for a while today, but since they had confirmation that this was not H1N1 (they did not release any specifics about this case) all links and articles vanished. The original pages are also no longer existing.

Stay safe!
