In the last week the hospitalizations with confirmed new influenza A (h1n1) has doubled compared to last week. There were 54 patients reported this period. 2 new deaths were also reported, a 14 year old female and a 40 year old man.
The age distrubition of those patients hospitalized with confirmed new influenza A shows that these patients are mostly younger than 65 years. There is a peak in the age group of 9 to 4 years. In the previous weeks this peak was between the ages 15 to 24.
In total, until october 21, 205 patients were hospitalized and 6 patients died. 61% of those hospitalized (including fatal cases) had underlying medical conditions.
The number of patients with flu-like symptoms that visited the GP during the last week increased. The incidence of influenza-like ilness in the past week was 7.6 per 10,000 inhabitants. In 13 of the 40 samples (32,5%) influenza A (H1N1) was found. The incidence of pneumonia was 1.1 per 10,000 inhabitants.
7 patients had to be admitted to intensive care units in the last week. A total of 31 patients are/have been in the intensive care. Of these patients, 21 persons required mechanical ventilation and 58.1% of the patients had underlying medical conditions. The age distribution shows a peak in the age group of 5 to 14 years.
95% of the National Influenza Center for week 28 sampled viruses were of type A (H1N1)v.
No resistence to oseltamivir or zanamivir have been reported.
Within the Nursing Infectious Deseases Surveilance Network (SNIV) no further increase in the incidence of Influenza like ilnesses were reported. There is no increase in pneumonia among nursing home residents.
In the week ending on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 there is no increase in the total mortality and mortality by age.

Conclusion:
The distribution of New Influenza A(H1N1) in the Netherlands under the general population increased last week.
