Right, Venezuelans read about the H1N1 outbreak in Mexico and forgot to wash their hands (and coincidentally were infected with the sub-clade from Mexico)!

Grin, it makes perfect sense, not.

The baby is still in ICU

Barboza said the six month old baby remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private clinic. The specialist noted that little is stable, however, the nature of the virus affecting more aggressive in the extreme ages of life, special care is taken.

H1N1 influenza outbreak continues to rise
-----------------------------------------
At least 712 positive cases of influenza A/H1N1 virus infection and 8
deaths were recorded in the country during the past 3 weeks, according
to recent statements issued by the health minister Eugenia Sader. The
minister said that the deceased had "severe pathologies." "Patients
suffering from hypertension, heart disease, are likely to react
adversely to influenza virus infection".

Sader stressed that the epidemic barrier implemented in the state of
Merida was a consequence of reappearance of the virus, which had
affected 196 people, equivalent to 20 patients per 100 000 inhabitants
in the state. She stated that in the case of the capital, Caracas,
there were 174 cases, with 8 out of 100 000 affected.

Meanwhile, the national government through the MOH has implemented a
prevention and vaccination campaign, focusing on the population
considered to be at risk (the elderly, pregnant women and people with
respiratory or immune diseases).

The above ProMED post is odd because it really just perpetuates the myth that the fatal H1N1 cases are only liked to patients with pre-existing conditions. It is VERY likely that the H1N1 in Venezuela is the same sub=clade as Chihuahua, Mexico and the first two reported fatalities were traffic patrol officers (26M and 36M) with no indication of pre-existing conditions. Their cases led to a vaccinatio drive for the entire department, which would be largely composed of healthy young adults.
Thus, ProMED is helping to perpetuate the H1N1 myth on pre-existing conditions. This myth is widespread. In the US the CDC FluView lists pre-existing conditions for hospitalized cases. One is obesity, which they define as a BMI of 30, when the strong risk factor is a BMI of 40 (morbidly obese). In the US, 30% of the adult population is obese (BMI of 30 or more), yet only 16% of the hospitalized patients are obese, WELL below the frequency in the overall population. Thus, these irrelevant "pre-existing conditions" are used to paint a picture of severe and fatal cases in an "at risk" population, when the "at risk" definition is a fantasy, no science required.

unique'

Three factors determine the particular behavior of the H1N1 virus in Venezuela, compared with the rest of the world: geography, growth and dominance.

After analyzing the current reports of the Pan American Health and Epidemiology Bulletin No. 12, Ministry of Health, former Health Minister Jose Felix Oletta said the fact that the virus is found throughout the national territory is a condition does not happen in most any other party.

'The behavior of increased circulation of influenza H1N1 virus is exceptional and unique in the continent, probably in the world, according to the document EW09 Regional Influenza Update March 15, 2011, OPS', shown in latest report of the Scientific Medical Societies Network Venezuelan.

The epidemiologist said, by way of example, that in Mexico there were cases, but especially in the state of Chihuahua. In Russia, the spread of the virus is targeted.

While Cuba, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Argentina and Paraguay do not show movement of H1N1 influenza virus, and in Jamaica, Ecuador and Colombia recorded a few cases.

Oletta also highlighted the fact that the prevalence of the virus. Of the cases that were positive in the samples analyzed at the National Institute of Hygiene Rafael Rangel influenza was 49%, of that total, 86% was specifically H1N1, making it the dominant virus.

As for the victims that has claimed the disease so far this year has doubled the number of deaths (8) compared to the total of all 2010 (4).

Oletta referred to the vaccine shortage and what it considers unnecessary immunization to people aged 59 years, the vast majority have antibodies to fend off the virus. The most vulnerable groups (apart from the chronically ill and pregnant women) children 1 to 4 years of age, children under 1 year and those between 25 and 49.

On Monday, the chain Locatel received another batch of immunizations for adults but not children. Yesterday there were long queues of people waiting to be immunized against the disease. According to the latest report from the Ministry of Health recorded 712 infections.

Patience and Prevention. The plan for immunization against H1N1 in Táchira is incomplete. The state only 30,000 doses were sent.

'The biological product arrived on Thursday last week and started to make the distribution to health districts to get them to come to clinics and hospitals, "said Noel Calderon CorposaludTáchira epidemiologist.

At points like the Comprehensive Diagnostic Medical Center San Juan Bautista, San Cristobal, were placed signs warning of the lack of vaccines.

Calderon said, according to reports, attended mostly vaccinated elderly people and patients with any condition. It noted that still shots against the H1N1 requesting the Ministry of Health. 'We must have patience, but we urge the group to comply with preventive measures, "he said.

Were positive in samples taken from a volunteer working in Cuban Barrio Adentro and was traveling in Caracas and surrounding states to Táchira. Calderon said that both the group working abroad and who live with him undergo clinical follow up.

Esepcial) .- With the growth of the numbers of people affected by the H1N1 virus in Carabobo - which this weekend rose to 40 -, Carlos Emiro Méndez, President of Insalud, again requested the Government to send more dose of vaccine in this state.
He noted that seven new cases of influenza reported by the Ministry of Popular Power for Health in this jurisdiction, which represents a growth in the number of people affected, so that regional authorities are concerned that while this happens, the ministry decreases inexplicably the number of doses of vaccines shipped to Carabobo.
Seven new cases with H1N1 are three men and four women, aged 4, 5, 9, 33, 46 and two of 21 said Jiménez Méndez.
'With reference what had happened to other regions of country over positives - that have spent hundreds - and concerned about welfare and tranquility for all Carabobeño, Governor Roemer Chambers Fernando Henrique was forced to demand makes one week to the Ministry of Popular Power for Health, the provision of sufficient doses of H1N1 influenza vaccine to immunize first risk groups and then to the rest of the citizenry ", said the president of Insalud.
However, expressed concern that the recent week, the ministry has only sent five thousand doses, as in previous weeks had sent an average of 10 thousand and 15 thousand doses.
The same concern and foresight led to the Government of Carabobo to prepare a campaign to keep the public informed about the basic steps to prevent this disease, he said. Similarly, stressed the immediate care of patients with H1N1 positive suspects, who are constantly monitored and receive treatment from Insalud.
Finally, Mendez Jimenez recalled the provision of 0-800-SANO-CAR lines (0-800-7266-227) and 171 of Civil Protection, through which citizens and public and private medical centers can make their reports on suspected cases of H1N1, which is essential for professionals to provide appropriate assistance Insalud.
