Caracas-confirmed cases of influenza A/H1N1 in Venezuela rose yesterday from the 202 recorded last Friday at 415, said the Health Minister Eugenia Sader, who denied that there has been further deaths from the virus.

He said that the four fatalities died from influenza in early detection of disease and said that hospitalized patients are stable.

Sadr said in a news conference that the virus was brought by 19 states in the country, with 189 infected in the Andean state of Merida, 177 and 77 in Caracas Miranda, bordering the capital of Venezuela, among others.

The minister appreciated the work done by specialists from the National Institute of Hygiene, where 175 samples are processed daily on Monday said there were more than 300 samples awaiting analysis.

Marcos Díaz Orellana, the governor of the state of Mérida, said that despite the virus outbreak in the Andean state, there is "no reason" to panic

Marcos Díaz Orellana, the governor of the state of Mérida, confirmed on Wednesday morning that there are 60 H1N1 cases in the region. Díaz said that two people have died in 2011 while 16 others remain hospitalized.

The official stressed that "an epidemiological barrier" has been set in the region, adding that "there is no reason to panic or to rush to get vaccinated."

Díaz Orellana recalled that Venezuelan state policy comprises vaccination against the H1N1, whether it is an A, B, or C strain of children under seven, the elderly above 60, and people with medical complications.

Lack of timely vaccination causes another H1N1 outbreak
No other country in the region has reported an outbreak as severe as Venezuela's

The new and violent outbreak of H1N1 flu cases in Venezuela has a clear reason: the lack of a mass vaccination plan in 2010, as the plan implemented by 18 countries in the region.

Venezuela, Haiti and Dominican Republic were the only countries in the hemisphere that failed to implement a plan to immunize their population against the swine flu or H1N1, against the recommendations of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and despite several official announcements. The vaccination plan has just begun, "15 months late," said Ana Carvajal, an infectious disease specialist and director of the Network of Scientific and Medical Societies of Venezuela.

The first cases of H1N1 in 2011, which were not officially reported, hit the state of Guárico (central Venezuela), during the fifth epidemiological week, in early February. Thereafter, there has been an upward trend with a peak in the tenth epidemiological week, when 43 cases were recorded up from 13 cases, according to data reported by the Scientific Network, based on the Epidemiological Bulletins issued by the Ministry of Health.

Eugenia Sader, the Minister of Health, confirmed on Tuesday that there were 100 cases of influenza H1N1 nationwide and four deaths. In its 177th Epidemiological Alert, the Scientific Network made a dramatic comparison: in the first weeks of 2011 died in Venezuela the same amount of people that died in 2010, when the pandemic ended. During the pandemic, which began in Venezuela in May 2009, a total of 135 people died and 24 of them were pregnant.

"The World Health Organization (WHO) had warned that the current outbreak was going to enter into a post-pandemic period. The WHO had suggested that the cases of acute respiratory infections and seasonal influenza virus could increase. Venezuela was affected by a hike in the number of cases. The cold spell has also been a factor to increase the number of cases," Carvajal added.

The cases did not originate across the border, but in Venezuelan territory. Therefore, members of the Scientific Network warned that "the activation of an epidemiological screening," as announced by the Venezuelan Health Ministry, will not be effective to fight against the pandemic.
