Mexico state near US on alert after H1N1 deaths

CIUDAD JUAREZ (Mexico) - AUTHORITIES in Mexico's Chihuahua state along the US border announced preventive health measures on Sunday to stanch a return of an H1N1 epidemic after four people recently died of the virus.

'School checks will be implemented following a renewed outbreak of H1N1 human influenza, as a means of protecting all students from possible infection,' said Javier Gonzalez, Chihuahua's deputy secretary of education, culture and sport.

Mr Gonzalez said four people had died in the state since last week, when authorities discovered a fresh outbreak of the virus, and state health officials quickly launched a vaccination campaign and outreach programs to inform the population about prevention measures.

Mexico raised the first H1N1 alert in April 2009. It has killed some 18,500 people since emerging that spring, according to the World Health Organization.

An H1N1 outbreak has also been detected in Venezuela, where health authorities last week said 85 people had recently contracted the virus, and three people with H1N1 have died this year. -- AFP

Ciudad Juarez – The government of the northern state of Chihuahua on the U.S. border decreed an "epidemic alert" for an outbreak of the AH1N1 swine-flu virus that has taken the life of one police officer and infected another two, while 15 citizens are suspected of having the infection.

Chihuahua Gov. Cesar Duarte called on the community Friday to take precautions, while at the same time the health-care sector is applying preventive measures, early diagnosis and opportune management of the outbreak.

To explain the urgency, Duarte said "it's important to tell you that this is not a pandemic such as occurred two years ago - we're announcing an outbreak in which several cases has been confirmed that are already being treated and are being given the necessary medicines."

He said that everyone with flu symptoms should go to a medical center to be seen immediately, and added that a committee of specialists has been set up to follow the situation and determine the actions to be taken.

Duarte said that a security barrier will be established around Chihuahua, the biggest state in the country, to keep the AH1N1 flu virus from spreading.

He added that for now, schools will not be closed nor will work be suspended.

Duarte said that one of those apparently infected is a native of El Paso, Texas, and is suspected of having brought the virus to neighboring Ciudad Juarez.

According to the El Paso Public Health Department, in 2010 eight cases of swine flu were confirmed there, while in the first two months of this year, 29 cases have been confirmed.

To prevent the spread of the AH1N1 virus as occurred two years ago in Mexico, leaving hundreds dead and setting off a worldwide alert, health authorities began giving vaccinations starting Wednesday to 250 traffic cops in Ciudad Juarez, after the news was out that a policeman had died and two of his fellow officers were infected.

In June last year, federal health authorities lifted the alert for swine flu, which since 2009 to date has taken almost 1,300 lives.

The argument was that "the circulation of the virus is minimal" and that since October 2009 "a sustained drop in mortality, contagion, and need for hospitalization" due to swine flu has been noted.

Duarte confirmed infection in Texas
By: AGENCY REFORM
CHIHUAHUA, CHIHUAHUA .- Most Chihuahua affected by the outbreak of influenza A H1N1 had direct contact with U.S. citizens who had the virus, said yesterday the governor César Duarte.

When to start a vaccination campaign for greater protection in the population, the president stated that a woman who died of the disease made a trip to Texas, where it had recorded 226 cases positive. In New Mexico, he said, there are 344 positive cases of influenza of which 43 correspond to the H1N1 virus.

Until Saturday, state health authorities had reported 5 confirmed cases, 4 deaths, 11 hospitalized and 23 suspected cases. Duarte said that in Chihuahua does not minimize the problem or take action in an irresponsible manner, affecting the economy and confuse the population.

From this action of general vaccination, including schools and external work will reinforce the health fence.

She called for people not to self-medicate for not hiding the disease, as this poses a greater risk, and requested to return hygiene measures such as hand washing, cover mouth and nose when sneezing.

"Such actions, along with the vaccine are sufficient to maintain essential health fence and break the chains of the outbreak that can put health at risk, "said the governor.

Meanwhile, the Tamaulipas Secretariat of Health initiated a health fence in the municipalities of Tampico, Madero and Altamira, located south of the state, to prevent infection in the population.

More cases of H1N1 in Austin
Seton using ECMO to save patients lives
Updated: Monday, 28 Mar 2011, 5:29 AM CDT

Kate Weidaw
AUSTIN (KXAN) - Concerns over H1N1 haven't been talked about in the news lately.

But at Seton they are still seeing cases come in and in some instances it's so severe it's life threatening.

"I was sick - I was so sick," said Cynthia Short.

When Cynthia Short was 35 weeks pregnant she became very sick.

"I was tried and drained and I couldn't get out of bed it was awful," said Short.

She knew this sickness wasn't baby related.

Her doctor said it was allergies but when she went into the emergency room she was admitted immediately.

"We were terrified," said Bill Short, Cynthia's husband.

Cynthia's heart rate was elevated and doctors couldn't figure out why she couldn't breathe.

After an emergency c-section her condition didn't improve so she was transferred to Seton.

Doctors gave a grim outlook.

"She is really in critical condition and there is only one other alternative to what we tried thus far," said Bill Short.

That was a new machine called ECMO.

"We enabled her lungs to rest and get through the disease process," said Dennis Biggan, Perusionist at Seton.

For 17 days Cynthia was mostly unconscious as the machine took her blood out of her body before it reached her heart, pumped it with oxygen, and put it back in so she was able to survive.

"Her lungs were so sick they couldn't transfer that oxygen into the blood or take that carbon dioxide out of the blood," said Biggan.

That sickness turned out to be H1N1.

"H1N1 is still a problem so we know we've heard of a rise of it in the past and it's still present today," said Erin August, Adult ECMO Coordinator.

This year alone three adults between the ages of 29 and 49 have spent weeks on ECMO in order to live.

"It's not the population we would think would be most at risk," said August.

Turns out Cynthia never got her flu shot.

"I've always had a very strong immune system and I never realized that by getting pregnant would compromise it so much," said Cynthia Short. "But I'll be first in line next year."
