H1N1 may not be in the news much anymore, but Paul Enegren thinks about it every day.

"She's been in the hospital since October 24th and ICU since the 27th," says Paul talking about his wife, Carolina.

Before getting H1N1, 31-year-old Carolina was perfectly healthy. Paul now spends every day at the hospital, and nights with their two young sons.

Paul says the whole family got H1N1. He and the boys recovered quickly, but Carolina's body reacted differently. It overreacted causing severe lung damage.

Paul is asking for prayers, and although the prognosis isn't good, his hope isn't fading.

"I think a lot of people still aren't quite sure that it's something real. It's very real."

Doctors agree and say although there are few cases now, that could change.

"Although the 2009 H1N1 flu virus has been less active lately, it is still circulating and remains a threat," said Dr. Eberhart-Phillips.

"Flu activity normally peaks in February or March in Kansas, and it is possible that a similar pattern will occur this year with H1N1."

KDHE says Topeka-area man died of H1N1

A 60-year-old man from the Topeka metropolitan area has died from infection with the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced today. His was the 28th confirmed death in the state linked to the virus this season.

The man's death was reported to KDHE on Feb. 22; his infection was confirmed Feb. 4. The man had underlying health conditions that placed him at greater risk for complications of influenza, KDHE said.

Carolina Enegren, 31, hospitalized for more than three months because of complications from H1N1, has died.

Mrs. Enegren, whose illness was the focus of an Eagle story earlier this month, died Wednesday.

She became ill from the H1N1 virus in mid-October. Her husband, Paul, 33, and their two sons, Phillip-Antonio, 4, and Nicholas-Emilio, 3, also got sick. They all got better within a few days.

But Mrs. Enegren was left with a cough that worsened and progressed into acute respiratory distress syndrome, a lung condition that prevents enough oxygen from getting to the blood. She had been hospitalized since Oct. 24 and in the intensive care unit since Oct. 27.

Her husband said he and their sons were able to spend time with Mrs. Enegren in the days before her death.

"We definitely got some good time with her,'' he said.

But the damage to her lungs and other complications were more than she was able to overcome, he said.

"Just let people know that they need to take the vaccine seriously," he said, noting that he and his family had received their seasonal flu shots and intended to get the H1N1 vaccine before they became ill.

Mrs. Enegren's service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church.

Sedgwick County has confirmed six additional cases of H1N1 flu over the past two weeks.

The additional cases come as the county's H1N1 clinic at the Wichita Mall is closing its doors. Although the vaccine is still available, the demand is too low to keep the clinic open.

The Sedgwick County Health Director, Claudia Blackburn, estimates about 40% of the population is normally vaccinated for the seasonal flu and that about 25% were vaccinated for H1N1.

Blackburn says there may still be a third wave of the virus and encourages everyone to get vaccinated.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment confirmed Monday that a case of H1N1 was diagnosed in northeast Kansas. Officials also say a second strain of the flu has surfaced in south central Kansas.

Dr. Jason Eberhardt-Phillips of KDHE says both strains are very dangerous.

"[The flu is] going to continue to cause illness," Eberhardt-Phillips said. "Some people will have to be hospitalized. Some people will die."

Eberhardt-Phillips says the second virus, H3N2, may impact more adults while H1N1 is more apparent in young children.

"[H3N2 has] been floating around in other countries around the world and other states," Eberhardt-Phillips said. "We're going to see both strains and also additional strains."

FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO) - Friends and family remember a former FMHS and Mesa State standout whose life was cut tragically short.

Amy Schutter, better known in the Valley as Amy Largent, suddenly passed away this week from a heart infection developed after catching the flu. Although she's gone, those who knew her say she's the type of person who will never be forgotten.

Fruita Monument basketball coach Dave Fox says it's been a tough week for him and many in the Fruita community upon hearing the news of Amy Schutter's death.

"I'm in shock," said Fox. "It's heartbreaking."

After leaving Fruita Monument, she played basketball for Mesa State -- then eventually made her way to Kansas where she coached both basketball and volleyball. Fox says he and her teammates have stayed in touch throughout the years."They did go visit her in Kansas and got the chance to say goodbye," said Fox
