THE medical director of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust says they have been “stood down” in relation to swine flu.

At a meeting of the board, Yvette Oade said pressure on critical beds had calmed down and advice had come from the Strategic Health Authority.

Director of nursing Helen Thomson said they had learned lessons from the previous flu outbreak.

She added that seeing young people affected by the flu outbreak had made an impression on many members of staff, which had resulted in a surge in staff coming forward to be vaccinated.

They said at present one patient was hospitalised with the flu and “a handful” of staff were off with flu-like complaints.

A grand total of 338 people who have contracted flu have died from the illness in the UK since September 2010, however new cases of the illness are falling, according to the HPA.

Data released by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) shows that the death toll has increased to on the 254 deaths that were reported last week. Where information was available, for 297 cases, 92 per cent (or 273 deaths) were linked with swine flu.

Of the 306 cases which supplied information regarding age, 10 were under five-years-old, 14 were aged five to 14, 217 were aged 15 to 64, and 65 were 65 or over. Around three-quarters of the deaths were suffered by people in an at-risk group. This means that they already had an underlying health issue, such as diabetes or heart disease, or they were aged 65 or over. The data showed that a similar number had not received the seasonal flu jab.

During the last week, numbers of GP consultations in England concerning flu or suspected flu has decreased to 40.7 in every 100,000. This has fallen from the 66.5 per 100,000 of the previous week. The number peaked on December 30, with 124.4 per 100,000.

Professor John Watson, the head of the HPA’s respiratory diseases department, said that the latest flu report indicated that flu levels were declining in the UK. He said that the peak of their activity looked to be over.

Influenza B muscles out H1N1 in the UK
As flu activity continues its decline in the United Kingdom, influenza B has edged out the 2009 H1N1 virus as the dominant strain, the UK's Health Protection Agency (HPA) said on Jan 27 in its weekly update. The number of doctor's visits for flu-like illness in England continued to drop after peaking during the last week of December. The HPA received reports of 84 more deaths, raising the flu season total to 338. Many of the most recently reported deaths occurred over the past 6 weeks but were just confirmed. About 73% of deaths involved people who had risk factors for flu complications, and most were in people ages 15 to 64.

Super-fit dance teacher, 21, is killed by swine flu in just five days
By Andrew Levy
Last updated at 12:00 AM on 1st February 2011

Katie Roach was fighting for breath within four days of being struck down with swine flu
Lithe, lean and strong from working eight hours a day as a dance teacher, Katie Roach was the picture of health.

But when the 21-year-old was struck down with swine flu, her fitness counted for nothing.

Soon she was desperately fighting for breath and within five days of being taken ill she died in hospital after suffering massive damage to her lungs.

Her devastated parents, James and Sharon, urged anyone with symptoms of the virus to seek medical attention as quickly as possible.

‘Don’t hesitate,’ said Mr Roach, 45, a gas engineer, at the family’s large detached home in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire.

‘Even if you think it is just normal flu, have it checked out. It is so much better to be safe and make sure because no one should have to go through this.’

Katie, who had a younger brother, Robbie, 13, started dancing at the age of four and loved ballet, modern and tap.

She won a place at the North London Dance Studio near Enfield when she
was 17.

She went on to teach dance there and at Cheshunt Dance Studio.

On January 14 she told her family she did not feel well but ‘nothing too abnormal, just under the weather’.

She remained in bed and on January 18 complained of struggling to catch her breath.

Paramedics put her on oxygen which she continued using until her death the following day in the intensive care unit at Papworth Hospital near Cambridge.

Katie – who had not been given a flu jab – was put on powerful antibiotics by
doctors at the specialist cardiothoracic hospital but her body failed to respond.

Her father said: ‘The doctors told us she could not breathe for herself because the infection had done so much damage to her lungs. Everything was starting to shut down in her body.

Katie told her family she did not feel well but 'nothing too abnormal, just under the weather', but five days later she died in intensive care
‘The doctors started to reduce the assistance with her breathing and we were watching the monitors and her heart rate was dropping and dropping.

‘I was holding her hand, her mum was holding her other hand, and we were giving her kisses and she just slipped away.

‘If you are going to lose someone close, holding their hand and telling them you love them makes it more bearable.’

His 46-year-old wife added: ‘We are just holding fond memories. We are trying not to think about what happened at the end.’
A tribute page to Katie has been set up on Facebook by two friends, one of whom wrote: ‘This came as a huge shock. She was such a great friend to so many people and touched so many hearts.
Katie worked eight hours a day as a dance teacher
‘The most amazing, beautiful, funny, talented person I have ever met. She always had a smile and never let anything get her down.

‘Katie wouldn’t want us to be down. Just remember all the good times you shared with her and all the memories. Life is unfair.

‘We all wish you were still here with us. Sweet dreams and carry on dancing.’
Nationally, the total number of flu fatalities so far this winter is put at 338. Thousands more have spent time in intensive care.

More than 90 per cent of victims had swine flu. The remainder had influenza B or H3N2, the two other strains in circulation.

Four in every five fatalities were from ‘at risk’ groups, including pregnant women and those with conditions such as asthma, diabetes or Alzheimer’s.

Singer Amy Winehouse has checked into a private medical facility in London after falling ill with influenza, according to her publicist.

The 'Rehab' singer has been admitted to a clinic in Harley Street. It is the same facility where she had a breast augmentation in 2009, reports dailystar.co.uk.

The 27-year old singer returned to the clinic several times during 2010 due to complications following the procedure, as well as checking in after injuring herself in a drunken fall.

Now, she is back under doctors care after picking up influenza following her recent gigs in Brazil.

'It's nothing serious - she's just got a virus,' said her spokesperson

The description of how quickly she died sounds like many I've read from 1918. Scary... :(

A BURNHAM and Highbridge councillor who has got swine flu for the second time is calling for vaccinations to be made more readily available.

Joe Leach said it had taken him over to a week to recover from the worst of the symptoms. He urged people with the illness to stay at home rather than visit their GP, to stop bugs spreading.
