Moscow primary, secondary schools suspend classes for week due to cold/flu

MOSCOW, January 28 (Itar-Tass) -- Primary and secondary school classes in Moscow will be suspended for a week starting from January 31 due to the high cold and flu rate in the city, city education department spokesman Alexander Gavrilov told Itar-Tass on Friday.

Moscow Chief Public Health Official Nikolai Filatov recommended the suspension of classes earlier in the day. “The cold and flu rate in Moscow grew by 1.5 times in the week from January 17 through 23, and 57.2% of the patients are children,” he said.

“The cold and flu rate is the highest amongst schoolchildren; it is 42.6% higher than the epidemic threshold,” he said.

“The decision is not easy, as classes have just begun after the New Year holidays and five days mean a lot for the intensive school curriculum. This is particularly undesirable for schoolchildren preparing to take a unified state exam and to apply for admission to colleges,” city healthcare department head Leonid Pechatnikov said.

“The decision should not trigger panic. This is a routine arrangement made to prevent the spread of the epidemic. Hopefully, the epidemic will decline soon,” he said.

The latest cold and flu quarantine in Moscow schools was announced in November 2009.
