Cutbacks putting young lives at risk

Date: 20 January 2011

I SEE this government, in its infinite wisdom, has withdrawn the programme Labour put in place last year to inoculate all children under five against swine flu.

I am aware there wasn't a great uptake as the threat didn't materialise, though we were warned this year it could return with a vengeance, and it has.

It has been said that the risk group is from babies to 19 years old. Now I am no mathematician, but that seems to be the next generation whose lives are are being put at risk.

In the USA that is the precise age group that is being innoculated. What happened to the old adage "prevention is better than cure"?

This strain of flu is such an insidious one, it doesn't, as is suggested, target the "at-risk groups" and leave the rest of the population alone; the death of that beautiful child Lana Ameen last week is a tragic example.

Not forgetting all the other unfortunate people who have lost their lives to this virus, be they in the at-risk group or previously fit and healthy.

This goverment must not be allowed to "bury bad news" and brush this aside and hope it will go away; every parent in this country must demand their children be protected.

It is obviously an issue of money, as a government official hinted last night on the news, then went on to say "the advice has been clear", healthy children will not be vaccinated. That was said immediately after the tragic picture of little Lana near death was shown on television – a previously healthy child!

Instead of bombarding the public with the dangers of obesity in the long term, deal with the imminent threat of swine flu, Mr Cameron. You have had enough warning, Gordon Brown heeded the warning last year and was well on the way to providing vaccination for most of the population.

Mothers around the country, put pressure on your GPs to lobby the powers-that-be on your behalf. This problem is not going away, now or in future winters.

A TWENTY-one-year-old Kidderminster woman who died suddenly after complaining of flu-like symptoms had pneumonia, a coroner has ruled.

Lisa Wimbush, of Trimpley Close, began to feel ill on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 but went to work as usual at the British Heart Foundation charity shop in Kidderminster. She took painkillers including Calpol but the following day she felt worse and called in sick.

She stayed in bed at the home she shared with her mother, Amanda Tovey, who went to work at the Co-operative in Stourport and phoned to check on her daughter before 8pm. Miss Wimbush answered the phone downstairs.

When Ms Tovey returned from work at about 10.20pm, Miss Wimbush was in bed complaining of being cold and asked for help to get to the bathroom as her legs felt weak. She got into her mother’s bed with extra blankets while Ms Tovey lay in a sleeping bag on the floor beside her.

At about 3am Ms Tovey fell asleep and when she woke at about 9am on the morning of Thursday, November 25, 2010, she realised her daughter was dead.

Dr George Kondratowicz carried out an autopsy at Alexandra Hospital in Redditch the following day. His report said he found evidence of pneumonia in her respiratory system which was quite widespread and involved both lungs.

Her blood contained hydroxybutyrates which are a non-specific indicator of pneumonia.

Coroner Geraint Williams recorded a verdict of death by natural causes. He said Miss Wimbush died in her sleep from acute bronchial pneumonia.

More than 100 people attended her funeral at St John the Baptist Church in Kidderminster on Tuesday, December 14 and hundreds of tributes have been left on her facebook page.

Her father, Paul Wimbush, of Cleobury Mortimer, who works for Royal Mail in Kidderminster, speaking outside the inquest, said: “It was very sudden. I am just handling it in the best way I can.”

He last saw his daughter last summer and they kept in touch via text and email. He has kept a text he received from her on Father’s Day on his phone. He described her as a girl who had a lot of friends and who liked animals, going to concerts, ice-skating and reality tv shows.

Money raised in Miss Wimbush’s memory, from a collection at her funeral and donations from Mr Wimbush’s colleagues at Royal Mail, has totalled £350 and will be given to the British Heart Foundation shop where she worked.

21F with pneumonia associated with flu-like symptoms is ruled death by "natural causes". SOP.

Baby was refused the swine flu jab despite weak chest
2:40pm Thursday 20th January 2011

By Hannah Al-Taraboulsy »

A DAD has hit out at health chiefs after his baby, who suffers from chest infections, was denied a swine flu vaccination.

James Earle, aged 31, says 15-month-old son Billy should be eligible for the £6 jab because he has suspected asthma and has even been provided with a tiny inhaler.

But those aged under three cannot be diagnosed so Billy’s GP, based at Penketh Health Centre, refused to give him the injection as he was not in the official ‘at risk’ group which includes those who have had drug treatment for asthma in the past three years, patients with lung, heart, kidney, liver or neurological diseases and children under five who have any of those conditions.

For peace of mind James arranged for Billy to have the procedure, which combats the H1N1 virus, at a private clinic in Manchester on Saturday at a cost of £105. Billy’s mum Heather Ditchfield, aged 24, said: “We were worried about the threat of swine flu because Billy’s chest is weak.

“We were told we couldn’t have it so we decided to do it privately and when we did the clinic was heaving.

“It was expensive but worthwhile but we should have been able to get it for free. I’m not happy with the way the surgery responded.”

James’s concerns coincided with the death of three-year-old Lana Ameen, from Birmingham, on Boxing Day.

The tot’s swine flu was mistaken for a simple infection and she died while being treated at Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

A spokesman for NHS Warrington stressed the advice from the Department of Health and Ruth Hussey, north west regional director for public health, was absolutely clear.

A statement said: “Independent experts have advised that children, from six months upwards, who are in at risk groups should be vaccinated.

“They are not recommending that healthy children should be vaccinated and this advice was recently reviewed. The vaccine is available to all children in at risk groups free of charge on the NHS.”

SHAMEFUL!!!

Flu death toll rises to 28 in Wales
Madeleine Brindley, Health Wales
Jan 20 2011

The number of people who died after contracting flu this winter in Wales has risen to 28.

The official flu-related death toll is now the same as that during the 2009 swine flu pandemic.

The rise in the number of deaths - an increase of one from last week - comes after a report yesterday by Public Health Wales which showed the number of cases of flu had fallen dramatically in the last week.

Wales’ chief medical officer Dr Tony Jewell today said flu is declining, although he urged the public to practise good hand hygiene to protect themselves from catching the virus.

Official figures published by the Assembly Government today also show 32 people are receiving treatment in hospital critical care units.

Dr Jewell said: “The substantial decrease in the clinical consultation rate for influenza shows that flu activity is declining in Wales.

“This welcome decline in new cases is in line with expectations and we further expect this trend to continue.

The fact that a hospital doctor had contracted swine-flu was withheld from the public because of "patient confidentiality" rules, it has been revealed.

Rumours that a doctor had been struck-down with the H1N1 virus circulated when public visiting was cancelled at a Merseyside hospital last month.

After the ban was imposed, on 28th December, the hospital officially denied that any member of staff was suffering from Swine Flu at Arrowe Park Hospital, Wirral,
More than two weeks after the denial it emerged that a Greek-born doctor who had been working at the hospital has died from the effects of Swine Flu.

The man, who was named by friends only as "Manos" was aged in his early thirties, and died at Southport Hospital where he had also carried out duties prior to his death.

Following word of his death the Liverpool Primary Care Trust said it was NHS policy not to give information on individual cases of swine-flu, a policy that covers both patients and staff.

A Liverpool PCT spokeswoman said: "We do not identify individual cases of Swine Flu for obvious reasons, that has been the case and it remains so.

"If a member of the press were to call the hospital with the same inquiry they would give the same answer, we don't address specific cases.

"That policy is the policy and it applies to both staff and patients affected by Swine Flu.

"It doesn't matter who they are or what their role is in the hospital - we would not comment regardless of that.

"This policy was adopted when swine-flu was at its pandemic last year and it hasn't been revisited."

A spokeswoman for the Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust issued this statement.

She said: "On 29th December 2010 Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust took the decision to temporarily suspend all in-patient visiting at Arrowe Park Hospital.

"This decision was taken to reduce the risk of visitors with cold and flu symptoms spreading infections to patients and staff. A formal statement to this effect was issued to the media."

THE NUMBER of people struck down by swine flu has fallen after the initial outbreak killed two at Eastbourne District General Hospital.

There are 36 patients in intensive care suffering from seasonal flu across Sussex, Surrey and Kent compared to 51 the week before – making up 18 per cent of people in critical care beds across the region.

A 39-year-old woman died of swine flu at the DGH on New Year’s Eve and the virus is believed to have claimed the life of a 42-year-old patient around the same time.

Another is thought to have narrowly avoided death.

Latest figures published by South East Coast Strategic Health Authority on Thursday (January 13) show that people under 65 years of age are proving to be the most susceptible.

Test at West Midlands hospitals detects flu in an hour
A swab is taken from the nose and mouth to detect the type of flu.

A hospital trust has introduced a test which can determine within an hour what kind of flu a patient has.

Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust is using the Xpert Flu test, which can detect and differentiate between winter flu and swine flu.
:)
The trust said the previous test could only be run once a day, as it requires a number of samples which are then tested in batches.

The Xpert Flu test can be run "on demand" a spokesman said.

Dr Beryl Oppenheim, director of infection, prevention and control at the trust said clinicians had been able to make treatment decisions in a shorter space of time, thanks to the test.

"The lab has been running tests on all admitted patients with suspected flu and where influenza has been detected, we have been able to isolate and treat the patient promptly," she said.

The test had also helped people who do not have flu as further inquiries into their symptoms could start straight away, she said.

The test is carried out by taking a swap from the nose and mouth and is being used at Birmingham City Hospital, Rowley Regis Hospital and Sandwell General Hospital.

ALMOST 200 people have died from swine flu since September, with more deaths expected, say doctors.

Government figures reveal 254 people have died from flu, with 195 falling victim to the H1N1 virus.

A total of 418 patients are being treated in critical care, down from 661 last week.

Lana Ameen, three, from Birmingham, died of the disease over Christmas.

FLU has killed 254 people since September – more than double the official death toll of 112 published last week.

The majority died from the H1N1 swine flu virus. The Health Protection Agency said that, despite the jump in deaths, infection rates of flu appear to be declining and GP visits and calls to NHS Direct had eased off.

Some 418 people, including 26 children, remain on the critical list. The majority of victims are 15 to 64. But seven children under five have died and another 20 are in intensive care.

The figures follow a call from the Government’s director of immunisation for GPs to hand over ordering of flu vaccine after ministers admitted there had been a “mismatch” of supplies in some regions.

Prof David Salisbury said there was a “pretty compelling” case for the Government to take charge after angry patients were turned away from doctors’ surgeries that had run out. But GPs, whose orders are based on estimates from previous years, were adamant they did not misjudge the number of jabs needed.

SWINE FLU SAVED OUR BABY

http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/view/17 ... -our-baby/

Quote:
MUM Donna Whatmore is one person grateful to have caught swine flu because it saved her baby Roman’s life.

Donna, 28, was poorly in intensive care when docs opted for an emergency caesarean op five weeks early. And they discovered a double-knot in baby Roman’s umbilical cord that could have killed him in the womb.

Donna, of Cardiff, who is married to Ryan, 24, said: “If I hadn’t caught swine flu, it wouldn’t have been spotted and it’s unlikely he would have survived.”
