...........There have been few reported cases of the flu so far this season, according to the Michigan Department of Community Health.

Statewide, 25 people reported having flu-like symptoms during the week of Sept. 5 at health-care providers being monitored by the state department to measure the spread and prevalence of illness.

..........This year, the H3N2 is expected to hit Indiana, as it already has in nearby states, said Shawn Richards, a state respiratory epidemiologist. That virus causes more severe cases of the flu than other strains, Richards said.

“We cannot predict what will happen. We don’t know if the H3N2 that is circulating in Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio is going to be significant or not. We will keep our surveillance up and we need to continue to look at it … to determine the severity of the season,” Richards said...........

AVON, Ind. (WISH) - A seventh grader at Kingsway Christian School has died after becoming ill

The Marion County coroner's office says the girl was admitted to Methodist Hospital with flu-like symptoms. Officials haven’t officially declared the girl died from the flu, though. They’re awaiting toxicology results.

The Development Director Jeff Niemeyer of Kingsway Christian School issued a statement on Wednesday.

“On Tuesday, January 18, Kingsway Christian School was informed that a 7th-grade student had passed away. She had been ill and was not in attendance at KCS at the time of her passing.

Flu is spreading in Indiana, with more than half the state’s 92 counties last week reporting cases of the seasonal illness – and the state confirming the deaths of two children from it.

Shawn Richards, an epidemiologist for the the Indiana State Department of Health, declined today to identify the counties where the deaths occurred, citing a policy designed to protect victims’ identities. They were the first children to die of the flu this season. A state report described one child as age 4 or younger; the other was from age 5 to 18.

Six people have died in Indiana from the flu since Oct. 2.

The Indiana State Department of Health figures show that 79 percent of flulike illnesses were positive for influenza in the last week of January but no new strains were circulating across the state. The state had two more flu-associated deaths that week and now has four overall this season.

.... for a total of .....? unclear

Flu kills 6 more Indiana residents; toll now at 16

Influenza has claimed the lives of another six Indiana residents, according to the weekly flu report from the Indiana State Department of Health.

During the flu season, which typically runs from the fall until as late as May, state health departments monitor flu activity. Generally the flu season peaks in late January or some time after that, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In all, 16 people in Indiana have died since the start of the 2010-2011 flu season. All of the new deaths occurred in people older than age 55.

Indiana covering IA outbreak in its week 46 report

Routine influenza surveillance in Iowa indicated a novel influenza virus in three children in North Central Iowa. This influenza A (H3N2) recombinant virus has also been detected in other states in recent months. The virus contains components of human, avian, and swine influenza viruses, as well as components of influenza A (H1N1) virus. All transmission has been human-to-human, and transmission appears to be limited. No additional cases have been identified in the last week. None of the ill persons has had any known exposure to animals. No serious illnesses or deaths associated with this novel influenza A (H3N2) virus have been reported, and all ill persons have recovered. Surveillance for this virus has been enhanced at clinics and emergency rooms in the area.
 Two human infections with novel influenza A viruses were detected in individuals from Indiana. Both patients were infected with swine-origin influenza A (H3N2) viruses. Both were hospitalized but have been discharged and both have recovered from their illnesses. One case was hospitalized in July, 2011 and one in October, 2011. There has been no evidence of an epidemiological link between these two patients and no sustained human-to-human transmission of these viruses has been found.

Although week 49 is now up, week 50 is delayed (updates are scheduled for Wednesday)
