Bucharest - Romanian authorities on Monday reported the country's first death from swine flu this winter.

The victim, a 60-year-old man, succumbed to the H1N1 virus on Sunday night in a hospital in Iasi, 320 kilometres north-east of the capital Bucharest.

He had recently visited Egypt and developed flu symptoms after returning, the Mediafax news agency said.

There are now two other confirmed cases of H1N1 in Romania, where 122 people died of swine flu in the previous season.

Romania Registers Third AH1N1-Related Death (this year)

Romania registered a third AH1N1-related death this year, as a 23 year-old woman died Tuesday in hospital in Ploiesti, southern Romania.

The woman, who was seven-months pregnant, was admitted to hospital last week. Her condition worsened rapidly and doctors had to perform a caesarean section Saturday. The baby only survived for one day.

Two people infected with the AH1N1 virus died in hospitals in Iasi, eastern Romania, over the weekend.
