A cluster infection of swine flu, officially known as influenza A(H1N1), has been confirmed at National Taiwan University (NTU) Hospital in Taipei, involving four nurses and one patient, an NTU spokesman said yesterday.

The patient had been confirmed as a severe H1N1 case, and was receiving emergency treatment in an intensive care unit after developing pneumonia, said Huang Li-min, director of the hospital's pediatric infectious disease department.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday confirmed two swine flu cluster infections affecting doctors and nurses at two major hospitals in northern and southern Taiwan.

Regarding the hospital in the south, Huang said that 18 people — one doctor and 17 nurses — showed symptoms. Five were confirmed swine flu cases.

“We urge people not to visit hospitals unless it is really necessary,” Lin said. “Given the nature of the facilities, there is a higher risk of infection at hospitals.”

The spokesman said that five other cluster infections, including the above cases, were reported yesterday.

In addition to the two hospital cluster infections, Lin said, two occurred at junior high schools and one at a cram school in Jhonghe City (中和), Taipei County.

Taiwan records third H1N1 fatality

"Taiwan's health authorities reported the country's third influenza A(H1N1) fatality Friday, a student from the eastern county of Taitung.
The 24-year-old man, who had not traveled overseas, came down with flu symptoms Aug. 11, a day after he returned home from a round-the-island tour that had been cut short because of Typhoon Morakot, said Lu Chiao-yang, head of Taitung County's Public Health Bureau..."

Taipei, Aug. 24 (CNA) Two cluster infections of swine flu, officially known as influenza A(H1N1) , were confirmed Monday among soldiers who are helping with post-typhoon relief and cleanup work in southern Taiwan's Pingtung County.

Lin Ting, deputy director-general of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) under the Department of Health (DOH), said two samples collected from officers and enlisted men working at Tatan Elementary School in Donggang township tested positive for the H1N1 flu strain and a third one tested positive for the H3N2 seasonal flu strain.

Meanwhile, two samples collected from the Wanjin army barrack in Wandan township both tested positive for the A(H1N1) virus.

"It marks the first time that swine flu cluster infections have been confirmed among military servicemen taking part in the post-disaster rescue and cleanup work," Lin said.

As to reports that one naval serviceman and one army soldier working in the disaster zone had succumbed to swine flu, Lin said the DOH had not received such information and described the reports as sheer speculation.

According to CDC estimates, Taiwan should have 60 to 70 cluster H1N1 infections.

On Monday, Taiwan also confirmed its fourth and fifth H1N1 fatalities.

Close to 40,000 people in Taiwan have contracted influenza A(H1N1) since early June, with a majority of them developing only mild symptoms, Department of Health (DOH) Minister Yang Chi-liang, who serves as chief of the Central Epidemic Command Center, said Tuesday.

Citing estimates by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) under the DOH, Yang said about 38,000 people have been infected over the past three months around the country, with some 12,000 getting the virus last week alone.

According to CDC Director-General Kuo Hsu-sung, there have been only 44 pneumonia cases induced by swine flu in Taiwan. Twenty-two of them have recovered, five have died, five are still in intensive care units and five are in normal wards.

"Swine flu does not necessarily lead to death from pneumonia, " Kuo said, pointing out that last year, Taiwan recorded 8,000 deaths caused by pneumonia, while for last week alone, there were 183 such cases, only two of which were induced by swine flu.

Swine flu could kill nearly 7,000: former health minister

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan could see 6,900 deaths and 7 million patients fall ill as a result of the A(H1N1) swine flu virus, former Department of Health Minister Chen Chien-jen said Wednesday.

A third of the population could be infected and one out of every 1,000 patients could die, said Chen, a respected former health chief who played a prominent part in the fight against SARS in 2003. “My estimates are conservative,” he added. He made the comments during interviews with local media.

Taiwan has so far recorded five deaths and 38,000 infected patients with a rate of 14,000 new cases a week, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Wednesday saw three new serious cases of A(H1N1), all in Central Taiwan, bringing the total to 47, the CDC said. The new patients were a 23-year-old man, a 23-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy.

“Hospitals can become major sources of infection,” Chen cautioned. The swine flu victims could infect other patients originally staying at hospitals for cancer treatment or suffering from a weakened immune system, Chen said.
