Savon Sanomat: Flu here for Christmas

Published December 15, 2010, at. 07:33.

Last winter's flu epidemic this year is expected to begin around Christmas, writes Savon Sanomat.

- During the Christmas break traveling around the country, the Finns, which spread the virus, "says Senior Researcher Tuija Leino at the National Institute for Health and Welfare.

According to Leino influenza period has already begun in Central and Western Europe. There has been found swine influenza H3N2 virus and one B virus. Also in Finland there are two different A virus this winter. This year's flu vaccine is a great protection against these viruses.

Especially older people may experience symptoms of the H3N2 virus, while last winter swine flu hit young adults hardest.

In Finland, the flu is spreading in the garrisons. Over 200 people have already fallen ill with swine flu. THL expects that once the virus begins to spread among the general population via young children. (FNB)

They are talking anout 3 viruses. One of the influenza A viruses is swine flu (pH1n1) and the other is H3N2 (same three viruses targeted by the vaccine).

A seven-year-old boy infected with the H1N1 virus has died marking Sweden's first death linked to swine flu this season, a health official was quoted as saying Saturday.

The boy was one of three patients being treated at different intensive care units in the southern Swedish region of Scania for H1N1 and died in Helsingborg on Friday, said Per Hagstam of the Scania division of the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (SMI).

"What (the three) had in common was that they all belonged to the risk group and had for instance other types of complicated illnessess," Hagstam told the local daily Helsingborgs Dagblad.

By December 26, 65 people in Sweden were known to have contracted H1N1, which killed 30 Swedes during the last flu season, according to SMI.

The World Health Organisation declared the swine flu pandemic over in August, more than a year after the virus that emerged from Mexico sparked panic and killed thousands of people around the world before fizzling out.

Three vaccinated has got swine influenza so vaccination don't give 100% protection against H1N1. Do anyone have some link of Pandemrix's antibody tests? Pandemrix was used in Finland too before narcolepsy alert.

Influenza in Sweden
During week 52, 23 patients infected with influenza A (H1N1) in 2009 notified under the Infectious Diseases Act, which is double the figure for the previous week. Since the start of the season in week 40, with 65 cases of A (H1N1) reported in 2009. A large proportion of patients (46 pc) were not vaccinated against the influenza pandemic, 16 were missing data on vaccination status and only three patients reported that they were vaccinated. The metropolitan regions of Stockholm and Malmö are now the majority of the cases reported. Although the maximum number of ill is in the 15-64 age group the incidence rate (the proportion of disease per 100 000 population), as last year more than bumps in the age 0-5 years. However, so far, the proportion reported among children less than last year. To date, a total of 21 patients received care hospitals of which five have had such severe symptoms that required intensive care.
Although the number of influenza A and B diagnoses reported by the voluntary laboratory reporting has increased over 51 weeks compared with last week. A total of 36 influenza A and B reported (14 A and 22 B) from five counties, including Stockholm and Västra Götaland which have reported the most cases.
Under the sentinel samples of influenza, a bit fewer samples received during week 51, probably due to Christmas holidays are. Among the 24 samples tested showed a influenza A and influenza B. All samples from the previous week is now fully analyzed. Among the 50 samples received that week, six influenza B and influenza A. All samples were taken in Stockholm, but one of the influenza B-positive samples came from Halland.
As part of sentinel surveillance of clinical influenza symptoms (ILS) has only a few districts surgeries submitted reports in week 51 due to Christmas holidays and we can therefore expect a degree of reporting in the coming weeks. Total notified Fourteen subjects with influenza-like symptoms this week from five counties, Gävleborg, Jämtland, Stockholm, Värmland and Västerbotten.

The Board's recommendations
National Board of vaccination recommendations, 2010-11 season

Table 1. Number of influenza cases in Sweden / current week
Number of influenza week 51
Number of week 52 Cumulative number of *
A (H1N1) 23 18 65
Seasonal Influenza A 14-35
Seasonal influenza B 22-52
Total 59 18 152

* Cumulative number is the total number of diagnoses from. weeks 40/2010.
According influenza network EuroFlu, the proportion of positive influenza tests increased significantly in week 50 and nearly doubled since the previous week. On average, the proportion of positive samples around 39% but the proportion varied significantly between member countries. Belgium and the UK accounted for the highest positive rate, where 62% respectively. 60% of all respiratory samples were positive for influenza.
The overall picture of the European influenza surveillance by the WHO provides is that in most countries in the region where influenza activity remained relatively low during the reporting period. During week 50 reported in particular Belgium, Ireland, Portugal and the UK an increasing influenza activity, while Finland, France, Italy and Norway only reported some regional distribution. Hungary is the only country indicated by a downward trend in influenza.
Several recent outbreaks of influenza A (H1N1) in 2009 and influenza B have been reported from the UK (England) which have brought great pressure on intensive care units. All influenza viruses characterized to date have likened the strains included in this year's seasonal influenza vaccine. Additional information about the situation in England can be found on the English county authority, the Health Protection Agency website.

According EuroFlu there are signs that the flu spreads in Europe has begun and that the influenza A (H1N1) in 2009, influenza B and influenza A (H3N2) viruses currently circulating simultaneously in the region.

Influenza in Sweden
During week 50, 12 cases of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) in 2009 has been notified under the Infectious Diseases Act and 10 cases belong to the next reporting week (51) is now notified of SMInet.
The majority of patients have not been vaccinated against the flu in 2009 or against seasonal flu in 2010, but the information is still incomplete, and the exact proportion of vaccinated can not be specified.

The number of flu diagnoses has increased, even within the voluntary laboratory reporting that 15 seasonal flu have been reported, 4 A and 11 B. The diagnoses were reported from laboratories in three counties, Stockholm, Halland and Västra Götaland. Since the start of the season in week 40 has so far been 20 influenza A and 34 B have been reported in the voluntary reporting.
Now increases the amount of samples in the sentinel sampling. SMI has so far analyzed 35 samples taken during week 50 and found two influenza B positive samples. Both are from the Stockholm region. So far this season has been three influenza B positive samples analyzed. All the Victoria-like, ie similar to the strain included in flu vaccine.

Several samples containing influenza has been characterized in the SMI. A total of six A (H1N1) strains characterized in 2009 and all similar to the vaccine strain A/California/7/2009 (H1N1). Six A (H3N2) (three of whom were from travelers who were sampled before 40 weeks), all similar to the vaccine strain A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2) and three influenza B strains two of which are similar to the vaccine strain B/Brisbane/60/2008 (belonging to B / Victoria / 2 / 87 line) and a B/Florida/4/2006 (vaccine strain for the 2008-2009 season, which belongs B/Yamagata/16/88 line). All influenza strains have been characterized are sensitive to the antiviral drugs. In addition to these five influenza A samples subtypats to H3 and two influenza B samples linjetypats to B / Victoria / 2 / 87 line.
Since we have an unusual situation with three different types of flu circulating, it is very difficult to predict future developments, but all indicated that influenza vaccination is highly warranted if there is any risk group for serious illness!
Over the past six weeks, the statistical model based on flu-related searches on the site Vårdguiden.se shown an upward trend, with a clear increase in the last two weeks. The model thus circulating influenza now noticeable in the community. This is also supported by preliminary results from the population-based reporting in Stockholm, Sick Report. The proportion who reported flu-like illness to the Sick Report has increased the past four weeks and each week 50 about 1 percent.
Increased flu activity is also reflected in the sentinel reporting. During the reporting weeks reported 22 patients with flu-like symptoms (ILS). The majority (13 pc) had visited a medical center in Arvika, Värmland, but it has not verified any of the patients had influenza.

Three types of influenza strikes while
The number of flu sufferers is increasing sharply, according to new statistics.
In addition to the flu now spreading two other influenza virus in Sweden.
- It's a unique situation, with three different influenza viruses, while all are at high levels. It feels insecure, "says flu expert Annika Linde.

Influence Orna has taken off. Cases of swine influenza tripled during the first week of this year, according to new statistics from the Infectious Diseases Institute.
So far, 357 Swedes reported infected with swine flu in the winter, most children under four years. One in three victims have been hospitalized, 17 of them in intensive care. The majority of those affected, 88 percent, are unvaccinated.
So far this year is a known deaths and Disease Control estimated that there will be more.

We therefore urge people at risk to get vaccinated and to seek care if they get flu symptoms, "said Annika Linde for Disease Control.

Unusually high levels

Sweden, in addition to swine influenza two other flu, the Hong Kong flu and influenza B, in circulation. All three flu is on the season high.
There are cases where people dubbelinfekterats and had two flu simultaneously.
It is troubling that so few be immunized this year, think Annika Linde.
- But it is not too late. This year's vaccine is effective against all three influenza virus. It also offers less side effects than last year's pandemic vaccine.

Expressen.se corrects: In this version, the indication of a death in the swine flu this year corrected, the current number is four.

- Five to fifteen percent of the population will probably become ill with influenza. We will see a few deaths, "said Annika Linde, state epidemiologist in the Infectious Diseases Institute.
http://www.aftonbladet.se/kropphalsa/article8410057.ab

Quote:
Since the end of November, the reported cases of the dreaded flu has doubled every week.

On New Year's Eve died a seven-year boy.

And during the first week of the new year, the number of newly reported cases of swine influenza have risen sharply, reports the Infectious Diseases Institute.
The big cities hard hit

The virus, which has not changed features since last year, still affects relatively more young people, but give mild symptoms for most people.

Last winter, worst-hit northern Sweden in the beginning. This year the flu hits hardest in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö.

Influenza epidemic can stop the planned operations at hospitals in the Oslo area.

Patients are placed in hospital corridors to accommodate patients with influenza. Most of them have normal seasonal influenza, that is not swine flu.

- Right now we see that there is a huge burden on most hospitals in the Oslo area and beyond, "says Bente Mikkelsen, managing director of the South-East.

For the number of flu patients are multiplied in recent weeks, and more ports than before in the hospital. It has consequences:

- If the pressure is increased further over the next few days so we are probably going to have to postpone some planned admissions.
- Capacity is blown

They are in readiness to receive the flu patients. Isolation rooms Diakonhjemmet marked with yellow, on a table outside is yellow infection coats, gloves, mask and hånddesinfiserende means for employees and visitors.

Chief Medical Mosvold Jacob says that it may be necessary to postpone the planned admissions:

- There must be followed from day to day.
The capacity of several hospitals in the eastern area is now exploded, and many patients are referred to a bed in the corridor.
