A five-week-old baby is fighting for his life in hospital after contracting swine flu. Harvey Flannigan is on a life support machine after he was diagnosed with the H1N1 virus and bronchitis.

Parents Andrew Flannigan and Michelle Dyer are holding a bedside vigil at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Left fearing the worst for their second child, the couple, from Manchester Road, Heaton Chapel, say Harvey is now showing signs of improvement.

Dad Andrew said: "On Tuesday, we were told that Harvey is 30 per cent better and the medication they’ve given him is working.

"He’s still on a ventilator but he’s now on a grade three rather than grade four, which means he was at death’s door.

"Once he gets to grade one he can come off the life support machine. We are so relieved and are now 100 per cent hopeful he will be okay.

"It’s very difficult particularly given this time of year and Harvey is just five weeks old – he doesn’t deserve it," added Andrew, 29, who has two sons from a previous relationship, William and Niall, aged seven and four, and a three-year-old girl with Michelle called Amelia.

Harvey, who was born on Remembrance Sunday, was rushed to hospital by his parents when he turned ‘blue, had no energy and an uncontrollable cough’.

He later developed other symptoms including breathing difficulties, inability to take liquid and puffy eyes.

Michelle added: "At the moment he’s critical but stable and has turned a corner after four days of intensive treatment. Hopefully he will be okay.

"We are so worried about our baby – we couldn’t bear other parents going through what we have, especially at this time of year."

Hospital officials confirmed Harvey is in a ‘serious but stable’ condition.

Seven people have died from swine flu this winter in Greater Manchester, the latest being a woman from Bury.

A child from Bury, who was described as being critically ill last week, is still being treated for the H1N1 virus.

Health bosses are urging vulnerable people – such as pregnant women and the elderly – to have a combined swine flu and seasonal flu vaccine.

Will check this article out later, Thanks Hopeful! ;)

I've got a consultants' appt up my local hospital tomorrow and will ask him if he's aware of any serious ILI there.

On Twitter, lots of companies trying to peddle their snake oil for influenza. Jumping on the bandwagon already.

It's official, government figures.

302 flu victims in intensive care

OMG.......................!

302 flu victims in intensive care

More than 300 people are in intensive care with flu, Government figures have shown.
Data from the Department of Health for England revealed there were 302 people in intensive care beds.

It is unclear how many have swine flu but they are expected to be in the majority.

New figures on the number of deaths from flu and swine flu will be released by the Health Protection Agency on Thursday.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley briefed Cabinet colleagues on Tuesday morning on the flu situation and told them the NHS had plenty of capacity to deal with the upsurge in cases.

Prime Minister David Cameron told a press conference at 10 Downing Street: "We had a report at Cabinet this morning from the Health Secretary about the situation as regards flu, and particularly swine flu.

"He gave a report about the number of critical care beds being used for people with flu. While obviously... the number of flu cases has doubled in the last week, there is still plenty of capacity in the NHS.

"I think the figures on flu are quite similar to two years ago. They are a little worse than last year.

"I think there is a very good grip in the Department of Health on this issue. Andrew Lansley has a great grip over that department."

Mr Cameron said he did not know whether his wife Samantha had been advised of the risk of swine flu to pregnant women while she was carrying their fourth child, Florence, who was born earlier this year.

I'm very, very concerned now............

Swine flu death toll rises to 7 [in greater Manchester] as 2 more victims are confirmed

Another two people have died from swine flu – bringing the number of confirmed victims of the virus in Greater Manchester this winter to seven.

A woman, from Bury, died at Rochdale Infirmary after being struck down with the H1N1 bug. NHS chiefs said she had underlying health problems.

A man, also from Bury, died around two weeks ago but tests have only just shown that the cause was swine flu. As previously reported in the M.E.N, a Manchester man, a woman from Bolton, two men from Oldham and a man from Rochdale have died after contracting swine flu in recent weeks.

A child from Bury, who was described as being critically ill last week, is still being treated for the H1N1 virus.

Three patients from Bury appear to be a cluster. The sequences released from HPA were noth from the Manchester area.

We have 30 deaths confirmed by the media and at least 302 patients in ICU . Updated post above.

HPA must release December sequences immediately.

NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale were unable to comment because the patient was not a Rochdale resident.
