After the scare that the world population suffered from the pandemic flu - also known as influenza, or H1N1 - the Ministry of Public Health of Rio Grande do Norte (SESAP) reports that although the virus continues to circulate through our town, he is losing strength. The reason for this phenomenon would be mass vaccination carried out during the last year, which desencandeou immunity to the virus. Currently SESAP observes the suspected cases in patients with severe breathing difficulties - who are hospitalized or had pneumonia.

This year, six cases were confirmed in the state with a death in the result of 159 suspected cases. In 2009, of 1432 suspected cases had 356 confirmed cases and 18 people who died from the disease. The concern among health experts is about the development of a new virus will mutate and genetically similar, can reach the population.

"Today the disease is controlled. The tendency is that people who were not vaccinated conveys the disease to others. Notifications and confirmations of cases are decreasing." This information is responsible for surveillance of influenza SESAP Estela Leal. Symptoms of flu include fever, body ache, cough, sore throat and head. "If the patient feels the symptoms, he should see a doctor" tells the expert. According to Estela, to take medication on their own, the individual masks the symptoms. "This habit complicates the physician's diagnosis. Without the effects of self-medication, he will prescribe the best treatment possible for the case," he says.

Estela Leal explains that a common cold can lead to respiratory complications such as pneumonia for example, and leave patients bedridden. "The flu can lead even to death, because it compromises the entire body of the individual. Now with the cold, the person is not so weak and is recovering in the brief period of three to five days," says the expert.

~ Would any virus show up as the leading cause of death post mortem? Anaerobic bacteria would proliferate on dead tissue...

I'm just not sure how an influenza virus would compete in that atomosphere. Viral Culture swabs actually have a medium that inhibits bacterial growth for that very reason. Bacterial overgrowth inhibits viral identification in cultures (Or that's what the lab techs tell me.)
