Indeed, the number of trips to hospital emergency flu and the number of serious cases and deaths are decreasing. On January 12, 1190 severe cases have been reported (including 15 last week) since the epidemic began. The Regional Health Agency ( LRA ) said that the end of the austral winter period is a normal influenza outbreak in Reunion. The influenza virus continues to circulate in the department - with co-circulation of influenza A ( H1N1 ) and B - in recent weeks, at slightly above seasonal averages .

An epidemic of seasonal flu is underway at the Meeting by the LRA which reports the results achieved with regard "The activity of sentinel physicians network linked to ILI slightly above the seasonal average"But also the number of crossings for emergency flu.

The sentinel network of the Meeting is currently composed of 36 doctors in 19 of 24 municipalities of the island. "For four weeks, the proportion of ILI consultations seen increases to 8.2% in week 38 at slightly above seasonal averages .

Also according to the epidemiological point provided by the ARS: "The monitoring network of passageways to emergency for four weeks shows a tendency to increase the number of crossings on the flu all hospitals in the island. "

For more precision: "Since July 2010, 16 confirmed cases of influenza were hospitalized , including 4 serious resuscitation. Two death certificates mentioning a direct link with influenza-like illness have been received by the cell saver warning and Health Management ( CVAGS ) of the LRA. The deaths occurred in people with risk factors ( advanced age , chronic conditions ) .

Children with colds, flu nearby!

Quote:
The number of colds in children increases before the arrival of a flu. According to a study published in the Inserm Weekly Epidemiological Bulletin (BEH), there would be "a period of about one week between the early outbreaks of nasopharyngitis and the ILI.

During three winter seasons, from 2005 to 2008, "we observed synchronization between elevated impact nasopharyngitis in children and the arrival of an episode of epidemic influenza," the researchers said. On three consecutive seasons, "the rise of incidence of nasopharyngitis preceded the arrival of the epidemic of influenza with a period of between 4 and 10 days," they said. Children could play a role of "triggers epidemics", the scientists suggest. Moreover, part of nasopharyngitis diagnosed in children may actually be cases of flu.

The researchers determined that the data collected by the observatory Hivern @ the-KhiObs, whose objective is to disseminate information on these conditions, would contribute to already existing detection systems, such as that the Sentinel network on influenza. In sum, children with colds, flu nearby!

Most

We have witnessed in recent weeks to a rise in the incidence of seasonal H3N2 viruses mainly or B which can run in conjunction with the pandemic virus in the southern hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand, the pandemic virus is most frequently detected as in La Reunion. In Europe, the flu season does not seem to have started, in France, the influenza A virus is identified only very sporadically.

Regarding the situation related to H5N1, the avian influenza outbreak continues in Egypt, Indonesia and Vietnam, endemic areas. During the month of October a human case, not followed by death, was reported in Hong Kong.

The epidemiological situation

Influenza A (H1N1) by data InVS Riverkeeper, ECDC, WHO:

Given the unusual lack of circulation of influenza A (H1N1) 2009 summer in the northern hemisphere, low virus circulation in the southern hemisphere during the austral winter, and the predominance of less clear influenza A (H1N1) 2009 compared to other influenza viruses, WHO said on 8/10/2010 passage post-pandemic.

In metropolitan France

By week 46, according to the Sentinel network, the incidence of influenza-like illness seen in general practice has been estimated at 23 per 100 000 population, below the epidemic threshold (149 per 100 000 inhabitants). According to data from the GROG network, the frequency of acute respiratory infections in ambulatory care remains low for this time of year. Sporadic cases of influenza A and B continue to be reported in a growing number of metropolitan areas, the activity of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is increasing.

Overseas France

On the island of Reunion, the decrease in the influenza epidemic started in week 40 will continue in week 46. From the perspective of viruses detected, there is a co-circulation of pandemic virus and virus and B. West Indies and Guyana, we are witnessing the end of the seasonal increase of influenza viruses are circulating subtype A (H3) seasonal..................................

Only about thirty cases of seasonal influenza has been detected in France this autumn. But an outbreak can occur anytime.......The Point.fr: This fall, the flu seems almost absent. Is it reassuring for the coming months?

Lina : It is impossible to predict. Very little influenza viruses are actually detected in France now, but it's a classic situation before the epidemic
