GEORGE TOWN: A patient hospitalised in the Penang Hospital here with suspected influenza A (H1N1) virus infection, died from pneumonia yesterday.
The victim, B. Nadarajah, 45, showed H1N1 symptoms with constant high fever and coughing prior to his death.

Nadarajah was admitted to the hospital on Sunday after falling off from his motorcycle he was riding and fainted.

His tongue turned yellow shortly after admission.

He was pronounced dead at the intensive care unit at 6am.

A hospital spokeman said the cause of Nadarajah's death was severe pneumonia with sepsis.

Sepsis is defined as a serious infection usually caused when bacteria makes toxins that cause the immune system to attack the body's own organs and tissues.

It was a melancholic atmosphere outside the mortuary as Nadarajah's family members arrived to claim his body for burial.

State Health and Welfare, Caring Society committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the victim's blood samples were sent to the Health Department laboratory for further tests.

"Preliminary diagnosis showed that Nadarajah was a suspected H1N1 carrier, but we are also looking at dengue as an alternative cause of death.

"The victim also had breathing difficulties besides the fever and cough," Phee told the New Straits Times yesterday.

The Health Department would trace the places Nadarajah visited as it awaited the blood test results due tomorrow.
