The Health Secretariat of Sao Jose do Rio Preto, 451 km from Sao Paulo reported the first case of death caused by influenza A (H1N1), known as swine flu. Another six people contracted the disease in the municipality.

The death of José Henrique da Silva of six years, is being investigated by police and health of the city.

The first finding reported last week that the boy died of pneumonia. But after a review of the Institute Adolfo Lutz, the cause of death was confirmed as the flu.

Before he died, on May 3, the child went through five care units and emergency rescue. Family of boy spent the last two days giving evidence in the 4th Precinct, where he confirmed that the boy was treated and released without doctors asked examinations to diagnose the disease.

The incident is being investigated by an audit committee of the Health Secretariat of Sao Jose do Rio Preto and inquiry opened by the mayor, who promised to punish those professionals who may have committed mistakes in services to the boy.

The delegate from the 4th Precinct, Valdir Carvalho, expected this week to receive reports and records of visits to health professionals to call for testimony. According to the delegate, if proven negligence or deficiency in services to the boy, those responsible would be prosecuted for manslaughter, whose penalty can reach three years' imprisonment.

After this event, the city population distrusts the ability of the city in diagnosing influenza. The coordinator for the Epidemiological Monitoring of the city, Luciano Lourenção acknowledges this difficulty but argues that the diagnosis exists.

The Center for Epidemiology, Municipal Health Curitiba confirms the first indigenous case (when the disease is contracted by the city itself) influenza A (HIN1) - flu - this year in the capital. A woman of 28 years, who had not taken the vaccine, made treatment at a private hospital and found to recover at home. Up to now had been confirmed in the laboratory only imported case of a boy who developed the disease in January in return for a U.S. tour.

According to the center's director, Karin LUHME, this is confirmation of the presence of influenza virus A in Curitiba - which should lead people to redouble their attention on the basic care and prevention. According to the doctor, who were summoned to the vaccination campaign should attend a health station until next Friday (21).

This morning (18), Parana reached 80% of the target set for vaccination. Are now 3.95 million people immunized. In Curitiba, 63% of the population 30-39 years have not taken the vaccine. Pregnant women, chronically ill, children between six months and two years and adults aged 20 to 39 years can still be vaccinated.

According to State Department of Health, throughout the state, virtually all groups already surpassed the target of 80% immunization. Pregnant women (77%) and adults 30-39 years (30%) are the exception. Were vaccinated 1.6 million people with chronic illnesses and 1.5 million adults in the age 20-29 years.

Parana is awaiting a response from the Ministry of Health about the possibility of the vaccination campaign be extended to the entire population of the state. A first batch of 300 000 additional doses will be sent by the Ministry of Health later this week, but the lot will be used to cover part of that was used more in groups that had their initial forecast extrapolated, as is the case of the chronically ill.

The application of the Parana government for the entire population is immunized is because the state was the most suffered from the flu last year, when they were over 60 000 confirmed cases of illness and 288 deaths. The latest bulletin released by the Health Department in the last 10 days, for this year show 1150 confirmed cases and 11 deaths.
