KUALA LUMPUR: Twenty-two National Service trainees at the Padang Hijau training centre in Kluang, Johor have been isolated for suspected influenza A (H1N1).

Director-general of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said throat swab samples were taken from them to ascertain if they had contracted H1N1.

"While these trainees are isolated, 525 others in the camp are being closely observed for H1N1 symptoms such as fever, cough, cold and sore throat."

Dr Ismail repeated his call to people with influenza-like illness to avoid crowded places and to wear masks.

"This is important as we want to contain the spread of the H1N1 virus."

Fifty-nine cases of H1N1 were reported as at 5.30pm on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases to 14,385 since May last year. A total of 77 cases are in hospital.


In Tanah Merah, Kelantan, the situation at the Immigration detention camp was under control despite symptoms of H1N1 virus being detected among the detainees.

Centre commandant Nik Kamaliah Nik Abdul Wahab said seven detainees were suspected of having H1N1.

"Another 46 detainees have been isolated since Thursday night as they were also diagnosed with fever.

"All the 53 affected detainees are isolated in four blocks.

"However, their condition is not worrying as a team from the Tanah Merah health office is monitoring the situation," she said.

Nik Kamaliah said they would be put under observation for seven days to prevent any spreading of the virus.

She said the affected detainees including a woman, were from various nations.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (Bernama) -- Thirteen more Influenza A(H1N1) cases were reported as of yesterday evening, bringing the total cases since the start of the pandemic to 14,479, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said.

He said the ministry also received reports of five influenza-like illness (ILI) clusters in Penang, Perak, Pahang, Terengganu and Sarawak.

A total of 591 ILI patients were still being warded in hospitals nationwide, of whom 70 were tested positive for the illness, he said in a statement.

Fourteen of them were warded in intensive care units, 10 of whom were in the high-risk group, he said.

He also said that the death of a 51-year-old woman as reported by the media yesterday was not due to H1N1.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 (Bernama) -- The Health Ministry on Saturday received a report of one more death due to Influenza A(H1N1), bringing the total number of deaths to 86.

According to a statement from the Health Ministry Saturday, a 48-year-old man died at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang on May 9, after being admitted to the hospital on May 6.

Director-general of Health Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said in the statement that the man had encountered breathing difficulties due severe bronchopneumonia and doctors confirmed that the death was caused by Influenza A(H1N1) virus.

Dr Mohd Ismail said nine cluster cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) cases were reported in seven states, namely Perak, Pahang, Melaka, Penang, Johor, Sarawak and Selangor.

He added that the number of ILI cases being treated in hospitals throughout the country was 577 cases from which 76 were confirmed as H1N1 positive, while eight high risk cases were receiving treatment at Intensive Care Units (ICU).

Since the spread of Influenza A (H1N1) remains active, he urged the public to take precautionary measures and observe hygiene such as washing hands regularly and covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing.

14 new H1N1 cases detected nationwide


KUALA LUMPUR: Fourteen new Influenza A(H1N1) positive cases were reported over the past 24 hours nationwide, increasing the total number of cases thus far to 14,864 cases, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican.

One influenza-like illness (ILI) cluster case was also detected in the last 24 hours at SMK Jalan Bukit, Kajang, Selangor whereby one of the four patients tested positive for A(H1N1).

"There are 64 ILI active cluster cases throughout the country," he said in a statement here Thursday.

Dr Mohd Ismail said 540 ILI cases were being treated in hospitals throughout the country and from the total, 45 or 8.3% were confirmed A(H1N1)-positive cases.

He said currently four H1N1 cases were being treated at the Intensive Care Units (ICU) where all the patients had high risk factor but the number of deaths remained at 87.

14-Year-Old Becomes 88th Victim Of A(H1N1)
KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 (Bernama) -- A 14-year-old teenage girl became the 88th victim of Influenza A(H1N1) thus far said a statement from the Health Ministry.

Director-general of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said the latest death involved a teenage girl from Perak who was not in the risk group."Medical reports and clinical tests confirmed that the death was due to "severe bilateral pneumonia" caused by the Influenza A(H1N1) virus infection," he said in a statement here Friday.

He added that four Influenza Like Illness (ILI) cluster cases was reported in four countries over the last 24 hours.

The four cases were from Lake Kenyir Resort and Spa (Terengganu) which involved five people, Jalan Cenderamata, Kg Kurnia, Kebun Teh, Johor (2 people), Felda Lui Muda in Jempol, Negeri Sembilan (five people) and Jalan TU 61 Taman Tasik Utama Air Keroh, Melaka (six people).

Dr Ismail said the 48 new cases has increased the total number of Influenza A(H1N1) cases to 14,912 so far.

From the 532 ILI cases treated in hospitals throughout the country, 76 (14.3 per cent) have been confirmed as A(H1N1) positive.
