KUALA LUMPUR: Twenty-two National Service trainees at the Padang Hijau training centre in Kluang, Johor have been isolated for suspected influenza A (H1N1).

Director-general of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said throat swab samples were taken from them to ascertain if they had contracted H1N1.

"While these trainees are isolated, 525 others in the camp are being closely observed for H1N1 symptoms such as fever, cough, cold and sore throat."

Dr Ismail repeated his call to people with influenza-like illness to avoid crowded places and to wear masks.

"This is important as we want to contain the spread of the H1N1 virus."

Fifty-nine cases of H1N1 were reported as at 5.30pm on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases to 14,385 since May last year. A total of 77 cases are in hospital.

In Tanah Merah, Kelantan, the situation at the Immigration detention camp was under control despite symptoms of H1N1 virus being detected among the detainees.

Centre commandant Nik Kamaliah Nik Abdul Wahab said seven detainees were suspected of having H1N1.

"Another 46 detainees have been isolated since Thursday night as they were also diagnosed with fever.

"All the 53 affected detainees are isolated in four blocks.

"However, their condition is not worrying as a team from the Tanah Merah health office is monitoring the situation," she said.

Nik Kamaliah said they would be put under observation for seven days to prevent any spreading of the virus.

She said the affected detainees including a woman, were from various nations.

PUTRAJAYA, May 17 (Bernama) -- One influenza-like-illness (ILI) cluster case was reported in Perak as of 8am Monday, Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said.

He said the ILI cluster case was reported at Tadika Usaha Junior kindergarten in Kuala Kurau.

"There were 26 confirmed Influenza A(H1N1) cases until 5.30pm yesterday, making a total of 14,411 cases. ILI cases being treated in wards totalled 629 nationwide," he said in a statement.

Dr Ismail said of the total, 67 cases (10.7%) were confirmed positive H1N1 and that eight of 11 treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) had risk factors.

He said the virus could spread fast in crowded places and urged those infected or had ILI to avoid public places.

"Those with ILI must quickly go for treatment at nearby clinics to avoid complication and death."

According to a statement from the Health Ministry Saturday, a 48-year-old man died at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang on May 9, after being admitted to the hospital on May 6.

Dr Mohd Ismail said nine cluster cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) cases were reported in seven states, namely Perak, Pahang, Melaka, Penang, Johor, Sarawak and Selangor.

He added that the number of ILI cases being treated in hospitals throughout the country was 577 cases from which 76 were confirmed as H1N1 positive, while eight high risk cases were receiving treatment at Intensive Care Units (ICU).

The woman's death brought the total number of deaths of A(H1N1) in Malaysia to 87 since the outbreak began in 2009.

The woman was 30 weeks' pregnant with her third child, was admitted to Penang Hospital on May 12. She had fever, cough and breathing difficulties.

Health director-general, Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican told reporters that the difficulty in breathing was because she had severe pneumonia. Dr Ismail added that doctors at Penang Hospital did their best to sava her and her foetus, but failed.

"I have repeatedly advised people who have symptoms of the disease, especially those in high-risk group and pregnant women, to get treatment early. Delay leads to complications and death," Dr Ismail said.

Dr Ismail said even healthy people could succumb to the disease if they did not seek treatment at the early stage.
There were 26 positive cases reported as of 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday (25.05.2010), bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 14, 718.
