KUALA LUMPUR: A 5-month-old baby boy was among three people who died of influenza A (H1N1) this week.

Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said one of the victims, a 53-year-old man, died because of the disease while the other two because of complications arising from it.

The man, who suffered from uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, hypertension, kidney failure and stroke, died at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu.

Dr Ismail said a 47-year-old man was admitted to Kuala Lumpur Hospital on April 17 and died three days later because of complications arising from influenza A.

On the baby boy, he said the infant suffered from hydrocephalus (water in the brain) and was admitted to University Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre on March 15 for surgery and died on Wednesday.

As at 8am yesterday, the Health Ministry received 12 new influenza-like illness (ILI) cluster cases from Perak, Johor, Negri Sembilan, Sarawak, Selangor, Malacca and here.

The new cases included 21 pupils of SK Temoh, Batang Padang, Perak; 70 pupils of SMK Puteri Wilayah, Kampung Baru, here and three workers of Kilang Keenway Industries, Kluang, Johor.

Dr Ismail said those with either ILI or H1N1 had been treated and quarantined either at their homes or hostels.

He advised those who were under home quarantine to follow the health authorities' advice to ensure they did not spread the disease to others.

PUTRAJAYA: A 61-year-old woman in Kuala Terengganu has died from influenza A(H1N1), pushing the country’s death toll to 81.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said the victim, who was suffering from heart disease, diabetes and hypertension, had been admitted to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital on April 23 for breathing difficulties and died the following day.

“Medical experts confirmed that the cause of death was due to A(H1N1) virus.

“We also received a report of another death in the same hospital in Kuala Terengganu but test results showed that it was not directly related to the A(H1N1) virus,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

He said although the 46-year-old man, who suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy and hypertension, was confirmed to have A(H1N1), blood test results showed that his cause of death on April 23 was due to pneumonia and sepsis from bacterial infection.

“We would like to draw the public’s attention that the majority of deaths related to A(H1N1) involved patients in the high-risk category, suffering from asthma, diabetes, kidney and heart diseases, and lung complications as well as pregnant mothers and those with morbid obesity.

“Therefore, we advise those in this category to get themselves vaccinated at the 104 government health facilities nationwide or at private clinics and hospitals,” he said.

Dr Ismail said in the past 24 hours, three Influenza-like Illness cluster cases — one in Malacca and two in Kuala Lumpur — were reported involving 13 people, 12 of whom were tested positive for A(H1N1).

Those confirmed with A(H1N1) included five students each from SJK(C) Jalan Davidson in Kuala Lumpur and SK Bandar Baru Seri Petaling 2.

Another cluster case involved two members of a family residing in Taman Indah, Malacca, who were given anti-viral treatment after being confirmed positive for A(H1N1).

Cases were admitted to Hospital Kuala Lumpur on 26 April 2010 after suffering respiratory problems, fever, cough and speech is not understood. He died on 26 April 2010. Although this case is confirmed positive H1N1 virus infection by PCR test, he also had bacterial infections in the blood and cause death due to complications of "septic shock with multi-organs failure" by a bacterial infection and not caused by the H1N1 virus directly.

Ministry would like to draw the attention of the public that the majority of deaths associated with H1N1 virus infection include those who have risk factors such as asthma, diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, lung disease, pregnant women and weight (Morbid obesity). They are easy to develop complications of existing disease or secondary bacterial infections that cause sepsis and death. Therefore, the Ministry of Health would like to urge the public who have risk factors such as the above, to quickly get H1N1 vaccine immunization in 104 facilities throughout the country's Ministry.
