In Hong Kong since May 1 this year, Asia's first case of H1N1 confirmed cases of new strain of influenza, it has been diagnosed with the total number of 12,456 cases. At present there are 104 confirmed patients admitted to hospital for treatment, of which 86 were in stable condition, 7 were serious and 11 critical.

Currently Hong Kong has a new nine people have died of influenza H1N1, another seven people died of influenza H3.

The spokesperson of Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) made the following announcement regarding the death of a critical human swine influenza patient today (September 5):

A 73 year-old female patient with a history of Thalassaemia attended the Accident & Emergency Department of PMH for septic shock and flu symptoms on September 4 and was admitted to medical ward. Her condition deteriorated on the same day (September 4) and she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for treatment. She was prescribed Tamiflu and respiratory sample was taken for laboratory test on influenza. During hospitalization, the patient was under close monitoring. Her condition continued to deteriorate and she was certified dead at 9.19 pm on the same day.

The microbiology laboratory of PMH confirmed the positive result of human swine influenza at around 1.30 pm today (September 5) and reported the case to HA Head Office and Centre for Health Protection. The case has also been referred to Coroner.

As at 2.30pm today, there were 375 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza in the past 24 hours. This brings to 13,693 the total number of confirmed human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong. Currently, a total of 136 confirmed cases are staying in public hospitals for treatment. Among them, 117 cases are in stable condition, eleven in serious and eight in critical condition.

Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included nine staff members of public hospitals (three male and six female, including five nurses, one allied health staff, one clerical staff and two supporting staff).

In the confirmed H1N1 cases, there are still 172 patients admitted to hospital for treatment, of which 153 were in stable condition, 10 were serious and nine were in critical condition.

According to a spokesperson of Princess Margaret Hospital, where the man died, the patient had a history of lung cancer. He developed flu symptoms and was admitted to the Infectious Disease Center of the hospital on Sept. 1.

As he was confirmed to have contracted the A/H1N1 flu on the same day, he was treated with Tamiflu and antibiotics. He was also put on ventilation support due to breath problems
