District Health Department No. 4 in Alpena reported another influenza related death in Northeast Michigan.

An adult male confirmed to have H1N1 died in January from complications related to the flu. At this time, it is not known if there were any underlying health conditions that put him at greater risk of complications from the flu.

“Sadly, we have learned that a Northeast Michigan resident has succumbed to illness associated with flu. We extend our deepest sympathy to the family, friends and other loved ones,” said medical director, Dr. Joshua Meyerson. “While most cases of flu in Michigan and nationwide have been less severe, this news demonstrates how serious influenza can be."

Since Sept. 1, 2009, there have been 66 confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza related deaths in Michigan ranging from 6 months to 72 years of age.

I contacted Michigan Dept. of Public Health. Apparently, like California, the reports are a late reporting issue. They, too, like California, stated that would be horrific.
Now I am not sure if they all have the same answer, but it sounds like a under reporting issue.
FYI from MIchigan PUblic Health.

The CDC shows when pediatric cases died when they are entered into the chart.

When did the 13 recent cases in MI die?

No information given, I was lucky to get that info. Sorry. Maybe you could call them and could give you more info as you are a Dr.
