Only two of the new deaths reported occurred in Week 11 and eleven of the deaths have been from Influenza A that was not subtyped. I wonder whether they were unable to subtype them or just decided not to.

Mass Illness Hits Farmington High School
60 students called in sick on Monday alone
Updated: Wednesday, 12 Oct 2011, 10:33 PM CDT

FARMINGTON, Minn. - Nick Wilkowske started feeling sick around 10 p.m. Friday night. On Saturday morning, he called to tell his Homecoming date he was too sick to go to the dance.

"Nobody likes getting sick," said Wilkowske. "But, getting sick and then missing an event with all your friends is even worse.”

Yet, Wilkowske was not alone. Staff at Farmington High School started learning about students who were too sick to attend both the Homecoming football game Friday night and the dance Saturday night. By Monday morning, 60 students stayed home from school, with many suffering from diarrhea and vomiting. By Wednesday, 30 were still absent.

“One is a big number when people get sick,” said Jim Skelly, spokesman for Farmington Public Schools. “We want to make sure nobody gets sick.”

The school turned its attention to the largest common area of the school, the cafeteria. All eight schools in the district use the same national food service, Chartwells. That company didn’t waste anytime getting the Department of Health involved. Inspectors came to the school on Monday.

“It appears, whatever it was, it happened last week, and it's not an ongoing illness," said Skelly. "If it is being passed on, it's being passed on person-to-person and not through anything the school is doing."

Doug Schultz, a spokesman for the health department, said they did not find any violations in the school kitchen. However, inspectors did note a number of self-serve areas. Shultz also pointed out that last Tuesday, students were serving other students tacos. That is not a health code violation, but it’s not happening anymore.

“Let’s say -- like pizza, for example. Instead of grabbing a common tong to serve a slice of pizza, that might be served by a person now. That will continue until the cause is determined,” said Skelly.

Wilkowske’s mom, Colleen, said the illness is already reaching beyond the high school.

“I want to know what's causing it. We have a neighbor who has a high school student and it ran through their whole family," she said. "I think four of them were sick.”

Inspectors will start interviewing all students on absent lists. At this point, it is still unclear if students and staff are sick because of a food-borne illness or not. They hope to know more by the start of next week.

St. Louis Park girl, 14, dies of flu complications

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. (KMSP) -
Family and friends are mourning the loss of a 14-year-old St. Louis Park girl who died from complications of the flu despite being vaccinated in August.

Pastor Tania Haber, of the Westwood Lutheran Church, confirmed that Carly Christensen passed away after spending days in intensive care.

"She lit up the room," Haber said of Christensen.

All girls' basketball games that were scheduled to take place at St. Louis Park High School against Fridley have been canceled as her teammates cope with the loss.

Patsy Stinchfield, the director of infectious diseases at Children's Hospital, described Christensen's condition as "gravely ill" on Jan. 3, adding that equipment was being employed to support her heart, lung and kidneys while the teen struggled with severe flu symptoms.

Family members told FOX 9 News Christensen had received this year's flu vaccine, but Dr. Michael Osterholm, of the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health says those who have gotten a flu shot should know they are not 100% effective.

"You should never assume you are not going to get the flu just because you've been vaccinated," he said.

Osterholm recently created a study focusing on the need for better flu vaccines because current flu shots are only effective about 59 percent of the time, and they work better when more people get them. He estimates it could cost $1 billion to develop a more effective vaccine .

ST. PAUL — A 14-year-old St. Louis Park girl is Minnesota's fifth fatal flu case this season.

The Minnesota Department of Health confirmed the teen's flu-related death.

Minnesota Public Radio News (http://bit.ly/10dudi3 ) reports since the start of the season, nearly 600 people have been hospitalized for laboratory-confirmed flu.

Health officials say the current vaccine is well-matched to the circulating strains of flu. The vaccine is not 100 percent effective for everyone who gets it, but the Health Department says it is the best defense available against the flu.

5th Minnesota Flu Death, 14-year-old Girl

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- A St. Louis Park teen has died after battling the flu. 14-year old Carly Christenson came home from basketball with a sore throat on December 20th. She ended up at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis on Christmas Eve.

A St. Louis Park school official says Carly did receive a vaccination. Despite that, she was still diagnosed with 'Influenza A'.

Carly died this morning. An Associate pastor from Westwood church was with family when she passed.

The pastor said Carly was in the church confirmation program and was a "beautiful bright vivacious kid."

All girls' basketball games scheduled at St. Louis Park High School against Fridley have been canceled as Carly's teammates mourn her loss.

Counselors will be available at the school to students.

Five people have died from complications from the flu in Minnesota so far this season.

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. - The hard lessons of life and death found their way into the hallways of St. Louis Park High School Tuesday.

14-year-old Carly Christenson died from complications from the flu Tuesday afternoon. She was a popular student who played on the junior varsity basketball team.

"It's a shock for everyone here," said Assistant Principal Scott Meyers. "Late in the day, students started to get notification via text messages and voice mails."

Christenson has been hospitalized for days, but her pastor tells KARE 11 shortly before 1 p.m. she passed away.

She did get the flu shot, but it's unclear if she was dealing with other health issues. But by all accounts, she was a healthy teenage girl loved by many.

"We're kind of dealing with the shock right now and having students just have a place where they can kind of meet with somebody, either a counselor or friend or a trusted teacher," said Meyers.

Meyers says extra counselors are available for students or staff who may need them.

Family members were too grief stricken to comment, but Christenson is described by her friends as a fun-loving, talented student, and a good friend.

"(She) obviously was a very wonderful young lady," he said.

The Minnesota Health Department says this would be the fifth flu-related death this season. But a spokesperson says a number of possible flu-related deaths are currently being investigated and expects that number to double when the updated numbers are released later this week.

Christenson is the second teen to die due to complications from the flu in Minnesota in the last couple weeks. 17-year-old Max Schwolert was visiting from Texas over the holidays when he passed, but because he was from out of state he is not part of the official state count.

"It hit us really hard this year," said Andre Harnitz, head wrestling coach at Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial Area School.

Officials say the hardest hit area is the south central part of the state. That's where Harnitz coaches high school wrestling for the Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial area, which is near Mankato.

He canceled the wrestling meet Tuesday night because so many kids on the team are out sick, including his own son. He says it was the first time the wrestling team had to cancel a meet because of the flu.

"Just off of our varsity squad, we have 14 guys on varsity, eight of them were sick," said Harnitz.

He says his son has experienced vomiting and respiratory problems, among other symptoms.

It is another example of a state, and for that matter a country gripped by illness with some unfortunately dealing with more than just that.

"We're feeling supported here, but obviously it's a tough time," said Meyers.

Christenson's pastor at Westood Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park posted the note below on the church's Facebook page.

Dear Friends,
Carly Christensen died today at 12:40 PM surrounded by her family.
The Wednesday evening service tomorrow will include a time of prayer and candle-lighting to remember Carly and to proclaim the promise of Christ, the promise of hope and light that the darkness cannot overcome. All are welcome.
Funeral plans are being made for Saturday. We will send out an update with the time.
Our prayers and deepest sympathies are with Carly's parents Sean and Sandy Christensen, her brother Wyatt, and many beloved friends.
