It is Winter! The weather has been horrific in that part of US. It is a wait and see game. There are many other types of infections around, as well.
Not disagreeing, just putting things into perspective.

As far as I know, this is the first winter that ER personnel have required masks.

Be greatful they are taking precautions. Keep us updated on his condition.

And why might they be wearing masks this year? Every February in Virginia is winter.

They are wearing masks, to prevent the people who do have a cough, from getting one. Is that the right answer

And why is this Febraury different from last Febraury? Are coughs in February in Virginia a new phenominum in 2010?

Because this year we have the Pandemic and last year we did not. I think it is great that even if not H1N1 in that hospital in Virginia, that they are going the extra measure to make sure people are being protected. They should have you wear a mask anyway even without pandemic and you have a cough. There is Pertussis an TB and other virus's that one should be protected from, not just H1N1 so I applaud the Virginia Hospital for imposing the masks. :clapping:

For some reason this reminded me of that line in the movie "My Cousin Vinny" about the magic grits and how the laws of physics must cease to exist in the witness's kitchen.

I think you missed the key metric, which is the % of samples positive for H1N1 (on page 4 of the above report). The rate is up to 25%, which is the highest it has been since November,

I wish we had more health care professionals like littlebird and MKey1 to keep us posted on real cases because we obviously can't rely on the powers that be.
