The CDC has released another series of H1N1 sequences at GISAID. Included was A/North Carolina/53/2009 which has D225G. Details on this patient were not provided, but the sample was collected in mid-October when there was an H1N1 outbreak at Duke Medical Center. At least four patients had H1N1 with H274Y. Those sequences were also released at GISAID and 5 sequences had H274Y as well as the rare HA marker Y233H. In addition, three of the sequences had D225G or D225N. At least three of the patients died, so it is likely that some or all had D225G/N as well as H274Y.

NC/53 did not have these markers, but it had D225G as well as the marker found in Ukraine (and Russia and Norway).

Good afternoon,

As I live in North Carolina, I am very worried, having just returned home from a 6-week trip up to Canada.

Does anyone feel that NC will be the next Ukraine? I guess what I am asking is: could things get as bad States-side as in the Ukraine? If the media doesn't report, how will information get disseminated?

Thanks,

Sequence was from mid-October as Dr. Niman states in his commentary above so that was a while back. Anything is possible, but I wouldn't get alarmed by that alone.

No doubt there have been other instances in which D225G has been a player though without testing we may never know the extent of its reach. There is no reason to be overly concerned that North Carolina will become the nexus, simply that it is one location that D225G has been known to make an appearance.

Thank you,

The information I am referring to however, was documented in another post regarding UNC hospitalizing some severe H1N1 cases very recently. The article also mentions that a new H1N1 wave may be coming..

Hmm, I see your point, Duke and UNC are awfully close; I'm in central Virginia, about 30 miles south of Richmond.

I'm in Charlotte, NC - not too far from you, in fact!

The Duke cases were in the fall, I believe. UNC cases were over the past, two weeks.

Take care,

You will both be fine. It will be us in California that get it if anyone. Be glad you are in NC. ;)
