There were 5 influenza associated pediatric deaths: NY (4), WI (1)

The rate of invasive S. pneumoniae (the primary cause of bacterial pneumonia) infections is running more than double last year's. YTD for 2010 there have been 454 reported versus 212 for the same period last year.

P&I rate continues to rise, which is not surprising given the rise in S, pneumoniae cases. Unfortunately they do not break out the ages for P&I (at least i nthe MMWR) so can't say which ages are seeing the bulk of those deaths.

Do you know if the Pneumovax Vacccine covers S. Pneumoniae?

Pneumovax covers (I believe) 23 strains of S. Pneumoniae, which therefore covers the vast majority of pneumonias, from any cause.

Thank you for the info. Back a few months ago, CDC was not recommending Pneumonia vaccine unless it was indicated. I wonder if they will change their mind now? :scratch:

I never understood that recommendation. It is considered a very safe vaccine.

Fortunately, not all doctors go by CDC recommendations.
