This Recipe saved my life a week ago when I came down with a Bad Norovirus (stomach virus) that's really going around this time of year. I had no Gatorade on hand (my kids drink it as fast as I buy it) and I was severely dehydrated within an hour of this virus hitting me. I was fainting, and every muscle in my body was cramping. I had this recipe (from the W.H.O. taped to the inside of my kitchen cabinet, and my son mixed it up for me.) Within an hour, I wasn't fainting, or having muscle cramps anymore.
You never know when you will become severely ill (too sick to drive to a store) so keeping these ingredients on hand can save a loved one's life. I had saved it because of possible shortages during a pandemic. Everybody needs a copy of this, it can save a person's life. Especially infants and small children who can become dangerously dehydrated quickly:
1 Liter of Water (measure accurately)
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda
1/2 teaspoon Salt Substitute (potassium chloride)
2 Tablesoons of sugar.
You can add any sugar-free flavoring that you want, such as sugar free Koolaid or Crystal lite. It's important not to add ANY more sugar than 2 tablespoons (or the diarrhea can get worse).
Mix all of the dry ingredients into the water until they are completely disolved. For bigger kids and adults, serve it cold, or over some ice. Most of you have these ingredients on hand anyway... they'll go a long way in treating severe vomiting or diarrhea. It's hard to always have Gatorade or Pedialyte on hand all the time. This recipe is used by relief groups to treat people suffering from life threatening diarrhea or vomiting in poor countries. It can be found on the W.H.O. website.
To someone who is not dehydrated, this recipe will taste quite salty, but let me tell you, if you ARE dehydrated, this stuff isn't half bad! lol
