Marshall County Public Health has been notified of two confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus in Marshall County.

Influenza A specimens were sent to the University Hygienic Lab in Iowa City. Those specimens were subtyped and H1N1 was confirmed.

"Once we have three confirmed tests for Marshall County, the UHL will start sampling specimens, three to five per week," said Tina Coleman, Director of Marshall County Public Health.

Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center is also taking preliminary precautions and asking anyone who is ill to not visit the patients in the hospital.

More possible cases of H1N1 are being reported in Iowa as the state and the nation prepare for a fall outbreak.
Infections are reported in at least four areas so far, with 5 confirmed cases in Marshall County.
There are also possible cases at Central College in Pella, and Drake University in Des Moines.
Students have been back on campus for just over a week at Iowa State in Ames and already student health leaders said they have confirmed cases of H1N1...Iowa State is working with the Iowa Department of Public Health as part of its influenza surveillance network. Public Health is only testing a limited number of samples from the university, so it's difficult to know the exact number of cases. Iowa State will send its first ten samples to be tested and that way help public health officials better gauge the rate of infection...

H1N1 Swine Flu Pandemic: Iowa Contemplates “Forced Confinement” in a “Quarantine Facility”

Iowa public health officials have acknowledged the existence of a blank template entitled FACILITY QUARANTINE ORDER in the case of a Novel Influenza A H1N1 pandemic. The official press release states, however, that there is no draft or text of a “Quarantine Order” by the Iowa Department of Public Health.

A student at Bishop Heelan High School has tested positive for H1N1 influenza, but officials say the Sioux City private school will remain open.
The Rev. Patrick R. Walsh, president of Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools, said school officials learned over the weekend that one of the high school's students had tested positive for the H1N1 virus, commonly called "swine flu."

H1N1 flu cases confirmed in Plymouth County
Monday, September 28, 2009
By Magdalene Landegent

H1N1 has officially arrived in Plymouth County.

Three cases of the strain of influenza were reported last week by county doctors, according to Deb Steffen, Deb Steffen, Floyd Valley community health nurse manager.

No more information has been released on the Iowa cases.

Only one person in Iowa has died due to the H1N1 strain, according to reports by the Iowa Department of Public Health.

So far most cases of H1N1 have been not too severe, but taking precautions to not contract this flu is highly recommended, Steffen explained during a presentation at a health planning meeting last Friday.

"When we look back historically with a brand new flu like this, it comes in waves," she said. "Historically, the second and third waves are more severe."

Flu viruses can mutate rapidly, Steffen explained.

Health officials are watching the number of hospitalizations and deaths caused by the H1N1 flu. If that number, which is currently low, starts to peak, they'll know the virus is changing, Steffen said.

So far, the average age of people infected with H1N1 is 15 years old, she said. Children under 5 years old are at most risk for complications from H1N1, and people age 55 and older haven't been susceptible to this strain of flu.

Public health department reports 2 new Iowa swine flu deaths

By Associated Press

1:56 PM CDT, September 28, 2009
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Department of Public Health is reporting two more deaths associated with the swine flu virus.

The Health department reported Monday the victims were adult males living in eastern Iowa who had personal factors that may have put them at higher risk for H1N1-related complications.

The deaths of the men bring to three confirmed Iowa deaths relating to the H1N1 virus.

Public health medical director Dr. Patricia Quinlisk says the deaths serve as a reminder the virus has the potential to cause severe disease and even death. She added the fact the fatalities were in east Iowa is not an indication the virus is more severe or prevalent in that area.

Quinlisk says residents should take precautions to prevent getting or spreading the virus, including cleaning hands frequently, covering mouths when coughing or sneezing, and staying home when ill.
