H1N1 has officially arrived in Plymouth County.
Three cases of the strain of influenza were reported last week by county doctors, according to Deb Steffen, Deb Steffen, Floyd Valley community health nurse manager.
No more information has been released on the Iowa cases.
Only one person in Iowa has died due to the H1N1 strain, according to reports by the Iowa Department of Public Health.
So far most cases of H1N1 have been not too severe, but taking precautions to not contract this flu is highly recommended, Steffen explained during a presentation at a health planning meeting last Friday.
"When we look back historically with a brand new flu like this, it comes in waves," she said. "Historically, the second and third waves are more severe."
Flu viruses can mutate rapidly, Steffen explained.
Health officials are watching the number of hospitalizations and deaths caused by the H1N1 flu. If that number, which is currently low, starts to peak, they'll know the virus is changing, Steffen said.
So far, the average age of people infected with H1N1 is 15 years old, she said. Children under 5 years old are at most risk for complications from H1N1, and people age 55 and older haven't been susceptible to this strain of flu.
