Burlingame USD 454 Superintendent Allen Konicek confirms that one student in that district has a case of H1N1, also known as Swine Flu.

Citing a federal privacy law, Konicek declined to give details about that student.

LAWRENCE, Kansas (CNN) -- It started with a sore throat. Then her chest was burning.

When Perry became ill it struck her suddenly. While shopping, she came down with a fever and started feeling like she didn't have the strength to stand, she said.

Perry's flu hasn't been confirmed as an H1N1 strain, but a third roommate, the first to get sick, they said, was diagnosed with H1N1. Then a fourth roommate got sick, illustrative of a spreading flu pattern the girls said is obvious from the empty seats in classes.

The university estimates about 340 students, or 1 percent of the student body, have flu they suspect is H1N1, said Patricia Denning, medical chief of staff at Watkins Health Center. The number of cases could be higher if students were not seeking care from campus doctors and nurses, she added. She said she has not heard of any students being hospitalized because of the

The second death in Kansas of a person infected with the pandemic H1N1 influenza virus has been confirmed by state and local public health officials.

The death occurred in a six-year old child from southeast Kansas. The cause of death was determined to be the H1N1 virus. The illness was confirmed as H1N1 flu at the state public health laboratory on August 25, and the child's death was reported to KDHE on September 3.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said Wednesday that a 6-year-old in southeast Kansas has died of the H1N1, or swine, flu.

The department is classifying the death as the second swine flu death in the state, according to department spokeswoman Maggie Thompson.

On Aug. 6, the department reported that a middle-aged person in Sedgwick County had died of a chronic condition. Thompson said swine flu was a contributing factor in that death.

The death reported Wednesday, Thompson said, is the first in the state where swine flu is listed as the primary cause of death.

Could this one be rapid or just no underlying conditions?

Nationally, the advisory committee on immunization practices, an expert panel that advises the secretary of health and human services, gave the state of Kansas suggestions on who gets the vaccinations.
Eberhart-Phillips says Kansas will obey what the advisory committee proposed.
"We are going to follow these recommendations to the letter,"
he said. "These target groups include first: pregnant women, children who live with or are with children younger than six months of age, health care and emergency personal, everyone in the population age six months to 24 years and people age 25 to 64 who are at higher risk for disease for the H1N1 because they have chronic illness."
Eberhart-Phillips says there were a large number of vaccinations ordered, but it might not be enough.
"We have 16,000 doses," he said. "But that will cover one-half of one percent of what we are anticipated to need."
