KS H1N1 Flu Toll Reaches 23
December 21, 2009

A 27-year-old northeast Kansas woman who had swine flu has died, bringing to 23 the number of Kansans who have died after contracting the virus. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment says the woman had an underlying health condition that made her more susceptible to swine flu complications. The agency reported the death today (MON). State officials are providing no other details, except to say the woman was not from the Topeka or Kansas City metropolitan areas. The department said her swine flu case was confirmed in October and her death was reported to the state last week. Swine flu has been reported in 91 of Kansas's 105 counties since late April.

A community leader, honored last week by the Chamber of Commerce, died Friday because of complications related to the H1N1 flu virus.

Larry Howell, 52, was the Liberal Chamber of Commerce president. Complications with H1N1 caused Howell to miss the chamber's annual "2010 Men and Women of Distinction Community Calendar" on Monday, Dec. 16. http://www.swdtimes.com/article_1687.shtml

A 40-year-old man from the metropolitan area _ but not from Sedgwick County _ has died from infection with the H1N1 virus, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced today.

That brings the total number of confirmed deaths from H1N1 statewide to 25.

The man's infection was confirmed Oct. 27, and his death was reported Dec. 14. The man had underlying health conditions that placed him at greater risk for severe complications of influenza.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced today that a 52-year-old man from southwest Kansas has died from infection with H1N1.

His death brings the total number of confirmed deaths in Kansas from that influenza virus to 26.

The man's infection was confirmed Dec. 10, and his death was reported Thursday. He did not have any underlying health conditions that placed him at greater risk for severe complications of influenza, KDHE said.

Kansas health department reports 27th death statewide from H1N1, encourages vaccination
By Karrey Britt

A 78-year-old woman from the Wichita area has died from the H1N1 virus. Kansas Department of Health and Environment noted the woman had underlying health conditions that placed her at greater risk for death.

So far, 27 people in Kansas have died from H1N1. Between Oct. 10 and Jan. 16, 521 people died from influenza or pneumonia, and 19 died from H1N1.

Over those three months, 6,671 people died from all causes.

“Flu activity normally peaks in February or March in Kansas, and it is possible that a similar pattern will occur this year with H1N1.” s

— Dr. Jason Eberhart-Phillips, state health officer.

Seems like more elderly are dying now. I hope they are giving them the vaccine since we have plenty to go around. I have read more over 65 lately dying and actually saw a graph that the most affected ages at this time are the 45-64 year age group.

Weren't the elderly among the last on the list to receive the H1N1 vaccine? Is it possible that their receipt of the vaccine now might be causing the deaths they are reporting? It sure did cause a lot of healthy people I know to feel sick for a week or so after they took it.

Mild flu-like symptoms are possible; not death.

Yes, if they even received it. I know that my father who is 85 has not received it just his seasonal flu shot. I think this is the case in his facility where he resides, as well.
I do not know if I am even giving him one. He has his pneumonia vaccine updated. My mother passed on after her flu shot from pneumonia, So I think 1 death is enough right now. I am going to watch the facility and see if things start to change. Right now ok. Also, the seniors were only recently told to get it, so many still think they are immune. :(
