I should preface this by saying I have no real knowledge of how the Mapping thing works. I am familiar with "Official Numbers", which is I assume where most of the data comes from. Following are some of the man reasons you'll see "weird" numbers pop up occassionally:

* Reporting lags
* under reporting due to the fact that they aren't even testing
* under reporting due to misclassification
* Huge number swings as they change reporting formats
* and simply incorrect data due to incompetency, and failure of responsible entities / states to report the data

For instance - a couple of months back there was one week where CDC numbers atually showed almost a DROP in the total number of hospitalizations from the previous week. Still haven't figured that one out, nor heard any sort of explanation. Naturally no one in the "pet pool" of reporters is going to point it out in a briefing & questions section.

I think this map is generally helpful from the standpoint that it at least shows whats going on "Officially", and it does confirm that this thing is spreading, and can provide some trend analysis. The technology looks solid. But the weakness of any mapping or charting product is found in the data, and when your data source is the likes of the CDC & the WHO - you're basically screwed.

I'm just trying to make a point that the map is senseless..none of the numbers on this website are real. The numbers are DRAMICALLY HIGH and the CDC and the WHO release limited numbers for the benefit of the public :grin:

I don't think it is totally senseless, just rendered much less than perfect by inconsistent and incorrect data. But that's not the maps fault. If I am not mistaken, the map is primarily a showcase for it's capabilities. And I think it proves itself well enough.

I do think that if someone wants to really understand what is going on - better to read and follow the posts. But attacking the underlying data of the map shouldn't be in any way associated with the overall site, nor with the capabilities of the map technology.

If you want to rant about data - I should direct you to your nearest WHO/CDC briefing. I assure you that you will find plenty of incorrect, misleading and non-existant data to rail against.

Every point on the map is linked to a news story and verified by Niman.
If you believe what the WHO and the CDC are releasing, I have a bridge I want to sell you.
If you click on a map point, you find a link to the source.

Perhaps take the drama to another board. All of us are volunteering our time for this and really don't have the time nor energy for it.
