Quote: Fifth Death From Swine Flu
A 60 year old man has died from Swine flu, bringing the death toll in Sweden from the AH1NI virus to five. The man was found dead in his flat in Örebro in central Sweden. He'd been off work sick for a week. Tests showed that the primary cause of death was cardiac arrest, brought on by the flu.
Meanwhile a 14 year old boy is on a respirator in hospital after falling severely ill from the virus. According to the latest figures from the Institute for Infectious Disease, 51 people are currently in hospital being treated for Swine Flu in Sweden. Three of these are on respirators and one on an artificial lung machine. Source: http://www.sr.se/cgi-bin/international/ ... el=3228519

50 year old man, one of the two seriously ill who received treatment in the artificial lung at University Hospital in Lund, died early this morning in swine influenza. According to his relatives Bob Lindborg had no other diseases, and belonged to no riskgroup. Bob Lindborg had no other complications, but was sent home from both the health center and from the medical clinic in Malmö where he sought treatment there for about two weeks ago. Only at the third attempt, October 28, when Bob Lindborg was so ill that he fell into a coma, he received care. he was directly in the artificial lung, ECMO, at USiL and has been treated so ever since. http://translate.google.com/translate?p ... ry_state0=Bob Lindborg is the eighth known death of swine flu in Sweden

Ptarmigan, Thanks so much for posting. I would be very interested in knowing more about what examples were found in Sweden. I used google translate on this article (from your link) and a few others last night. Mutation kan gå längre ner i lungorna I only see numbers for the Norwegian cases - 70 tested, 3 mutations found, two of which were fatal cases. On the Swedish side, I see only that this same mutation that the Norwegians have seen has been seen in mild to severe cases in Sweden - a range of outcomes. More specifics about when the changed strains were found in Sweden and how many times and the outcomes would be great, if you can find out.

kat wrote: In Sweden, the variant was detected in two patients who were cared for in ECMO in July and in August. Thank you, kat, for your posting. I guess the fact that the two patients detected in Sweden needed ECMO clearly says that Sweden's h1n1 patients with this variant were severely ill.

http://www.thelocal.se/23430/20091123/Quote: Sweden confirms 14 swine flu deaths [...] Three women and eleven men have died from the swine flu in Sweden since August, according to the country’s disease control authorities.
On Monday, Sweden’s Institute for Infections Disease Control (Smittskyddsinstitutet – SMI) published an accounting of all Swedes the agency has confirmed died from the A/H1N1 virus.
“We’re expecting more deaths, but hopefully fewer than we excepted at the beginning,” said SMI epidemiologist Andreas Heddini to the TT news agency, who added that the agency had expected more swine flu fatalities than have been reported thus far.
Among those who have died from the swine flu are a 3-year-old boy and 16-year-old boy, both of whom were members of a known risk group.
Most of Sweden’s swine flu victims have been above 50-years-old and the majority also belonged to a known risk group.
Three of eleven males who have died didn’t belong to a group known to have a higher risk for contracting the disease.
Sweden’s first confirmed death from the A/H1N1 virus, a 37-year-old man from Uppsala, was recorded the week of August 24th.
Eleven of Sweden’s fourteen swine flu fatalities have occurred in the last month, with the latest confirmed death, a 21-year-old woman from Östergötland in southeastern Sweden, coming during the week of November 16th.
While the 3-year-old was the youngest victim, Sweden’s oldest swine flu victim so far was a 71-year-old woman from Västernorrland in northern Sweden.
The deaths also have a wide geographic distribution, from Västernorrland in the north to Skåne in the south. The county with the most confirmed swine flu deaths is Stockholm, with three, followed by Uppsala, Örebro, and Västernorrland counties, each of which have had two fatalities attributed to the swine flu.
