BUDAPEST, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- A third person, a young woman, has died of the new A/H1N1 influenza in Hungary, Health Minister Tamas Szekely said in Budapest on Thursday. The woman, whose name was not released, had been under treatment for a malignant tumor. She had been receiving both chemotherapy and radiation therapy, putting her in the most vulnerable group of possible flu victims, Szekely said. An autopsy following her death last week revealed that she had been infected with the new flu, he said.

Previous fatalities in the country were a 34-year-old man who died of hemorrhagic pneumonia brought on by the flu and a 41-year-old man who had chronic heart and lung disorders.

Hungary has approved a vaccine for the H1N1 flu and began inoculations of its vulnerable population and health care workers a week ago. Persons with chronic health problems such as cardiac and pulmonary disorders and past or present malignant tumors are considered particularly vulnerable and are urged to request inoculations, as are pregnant women.

Deaths From Swine Flu Vaccine Reported In Europe

Vaccine manufacturer attributes high rate of side effects to novel adjuvants

As European governments forge ahead with mass swine flu vaccination programs, reports out of Hungary and Sweden suggest that some people have died shortly after taking the H1N1 vaccine.

The Budapest Times is reporting that a 64-year-old woman has died just two days after receiving the H1N1 shot.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine if there is a link between the vaccine and the death of the patient, who suffered from chronic, but mild, heart disease, according to the article.

So far just 4 people have died from swine flu in Hungary.

The country’s H1N1 vaccine is being supplied by local vaccine manufacturer Omninvest. The government there has ordered six million doses cover about 60% of Hungary’s population of 10 million.

Omnivest’s vaccines are egg grown and adjuvanted with aluminum phosphate. The company says that only one dose of their H1N1 vaccine is required. Though they have conducted limited trials with the H1N1 virus, their vaccine, is based on tests with the avian flu strain.

According to the Budapest Times report, Omnivest has threatened to sue over allegations that its swine flu vaccine may be dangerous. However, a leading advisor to the Health Ministry in Hungary, last week suggested that the vaccine is not suitable for small children and pregnant women, in spite of the fact that the shot is being offered to free of charge to those “at risk” groups.

Reports are also emerging out of Sweden that suggest more deaths have occurred.

According to the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, medical experts have said that a man in his fifties died of a suspected heart attack 12 hours after receiving the Pandemrix shot, which is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline.

The newspaper also reported that a 65-year-old women died two days after receiving the jab, she is reported to have suffered from a “muscle condition”.

Minister says Ukraine flu epidemic to create emergency in Hungary
By: MTI
2009-11-02 11:05

There is no flu epidemic in Hungary but the epidemic in Ukraine may create an emergency situation, the health minister said on public television late on Sunday.

"There is a very rapid and virulent virus in Ukraine; the number of patients multiplies overnight and this creates an emergency situation in Hungary because the virus will not stop at the border," Tamas Szekely said.

Previously, the virus was expected to arrive in Hungary from the west and south, the minister said. Currently there is no epidemic in Hungary, he added.

Last week, around 14,600 people reported to suffer from flu-like symptoms, less than the week before. An epidemic is declared when the number of new cases reaches 20,000 a week.

Chief medical officer Ferenc Falus said that so far the demand for new flu vaccination had been low. At the same time, there is a vaccine and medicine shortage in Ukraine and Hungary is ready to help, he added.

Hungary has already offered to take care of the vaccination of Ukrainian border guards and customs officers working at the border with Hungary, Falus said.

The Hungarian Red Cross has also offered to help, supplying masks and medicine to eastern Ukraine, home to an ethnic Hungarian community.

A Szonda Ipsos survey released on Sunday shows that 73 percent of Hungarians do not wish to get vaccinated against the new flu. The 18 to 39 age group is most averse to vaccination, with 86 percent of people rejecting it.

According to the survey carried out by phoning 500 people on October 30, some 27 percent of those who reject vaccination said they feared its side effects more than the flu itself. Some 23 percent said they were generally against vaccinations and 21 percent said they would not be infected anyway.

New flu - Virus linked to 15-year-old's death
Budapest, November 10

The death of a 15-year-old boy in a hospital in Szolnok in central Hungary last week was connected to the H1N1 virus, the hospital director told MTI on Tuesday.

The boy was diagnosed with the virus, which caused pneumonia and as a result of which alterations developed in the entire lung tissue, said Maria Marki Sellei. The boy's breathing became increasingly insufficient and this resulted in cardiac failure, which was the cause of death, she added.

He was the fifth person in Hungary whose death has been connected with the new flu virus.
