Flu closes Region 12 schools
Tuesday, 10 Nov 2009

Washington Depot (WTNH) - Concerns over the spread of the flu has prompted school officials in the Region 12 district to shut down Thursday and Friday.

The Superintendent of Schools, Bruce Storm, says they are closing the six schools as a precaution.

"While the numbers of Region 12 students absent remain relatively low in the aggregate, it is the steady increase of children out with "influenza like illnesses" plus the numbers sent home over the last few days that give us concern," Storm said in a written statement.

Storm did not say exactly how many students were absent today.

School is not in session on Wednesday because of Veteran's Day.

All extracurricular activities, including town events held in school buildings, have also been cancelled.

Also, here is a copy of the memo Superintendent Storm sent, posted at:

Re: Decision to Close School

I want to let you know that after considerable discussion with the Administrative Cabinet and consultation with our nursing professionals, I made a determination to close our schools on Thursday and Friday. As you will note in the letter I have sent home (attached), our absences are not extremely high, but we are seeing a steady increase in those numbers and we would like to try and slow the cycle of infection prior to Thanksgiving in a few weeks. This was a tough decision and can be misunderstood; it is preemptive and precautionary and intended to stabilize the health of our kids. I realize that it may create inconvenience for some families, but on balance we thought it best to err on the side of our students’ health and welfare.

Here is a letter sent out today by the principal of St. Mark School in Stratford, Connecticut. It is ridiculous because there are a number of H1N1 probable cases at the school, confirmed by positive Type A nasal swabs and diagnosed by pediatricians, yet the school is trying to downplay it, mask the medical evidence and otherwise ignore it. And that makes me very angry because my children, students at this school, were diagnosed with H1N1 by their doctor.

Dear Parents,

It has come to my attention that there is some undue concern regarding the “flu situation” at St. Mark School. The ability to communicate quickly via email and texting sometimes complicates matters and distorts the reality of the situation.

In order to alleviate any concerns, I will give you an update on the “flu situation” here at our school. I am sure that you can understand that we do not send home or announce names of students/staff members who may be out of school for illness. However, we closely monitor reasons for absenteeism- and that is why we need accurate reporting from home!

Thankfully, at this time, we are not seeing significant numbers of students staying home sick for the flu or any other reason.. A few parents have reported that a child had contracted the flu or was experiencing flu-like symptoms. It appears that many pediatricians are not specifically testing for H1N1 unless a child is seriously ill and/or requires hospitalization. I have been conferring on a regular basis with the school nurses and the Stratford Health Department since they closely monitor the situation in all schools, including our own. There are schools in our area with much higher absentee rates.

As a reminder, if your child is not feeling well, please keep him/her at home. Children with a fever they should not return to school until they have gone at least 24 hours without symptoms. Here at school, we continue to emphasize effective hygiene and prevention measures.

We welcome donations of extra hand sanitizer and tissues for our classrooms!

Please make sure your child/ren get plenty of rest and come to school after having a healthy breakfast As always, know that you may contact our school nurse with any health-related questions regarding your child/ren. I am also available if you have any questions or concerns.

Westport health officials, schools dealing with H1N1 flu
[...]
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Elliott Landon sent a letter home last weekend to parents of all Westport school children in an effort to quell what he called "unfortunate" rumors that the H1N1 virus is spreading throughout the school district. He said that although there have been confirmed cases of the H1N1 flu and flu-like illnesses among students, and a slight increase in absenteeism "above the baseline," there is nothing alarming in the slight increase.

Landon repeated a request made months ago that parents keep their kids home from school if they are sick, "fever or not." He said, "Regrettably, some students are coming to school sick (some even with a fever-reducing drug) unnecessarily spreading the H1N1 virus and other illnesses."

Article is entitled "Swine Flu not an issue in Weston schools...yet". However, see the contradictory information included in the article. The School Superintendent is first quoted as saying that the absenteeism rates are average. But then the Director of Health is quoted as saying that he has seen vast increased reports of flu-like illnesses, "a spike".
