Western Ukraine's neighbors Poland is ready to help Ukrainian doctors determine whether the recent widespread illness and death of Ukrainians influenza A/H1N1.

According to an UNIAN correspondent, said Deputy Health Minister Adam Fronczak of Poland at a press conference in Warsaw.

He said that the Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland Oleksandr MOTSYK informed him about the possibility of asking the Ukrainian government to the authorities of other countries to help identify the virus, which over the last ten days could cause the death of over 30 Ukrainians.

"We have declared an opportunity to make Warsaw a few dozen tests that will confirm a few hours, if people suffer A/H1N1 virus", - said A. Fronczak.

He said that the Ukrainian ambassador conveyed this information to the Ukrainian government and the Polish side expects a decision of Ukrainian authorities on the case.

"We are ready to provide such assistance at any moment" - he said.

A. Fronczak also stressed that Poland is ready to conduct these studies for free.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the influenza virus A/H1N1 was first introduced in Poland in May 2009, but the disease took place during a much "softer" normal influenza, because of which the Polish government in August refused hospitalization.

Agence France Press: Swine flu deaths soar, Ukraine closes schools.
Today at 21:06 GENEVA — The number of global swine flu deaths spiked by 700 in a week, the World Health Organisation said Friday, as Ukraine closed schools and cinemas in the toughest measures taken in Europe over the virus.

More than 5,700 people have now died from the A(H1N1) since it broke out in April in Mexico and the United States in April, the WHO said.

The biggest rise in the past week was recorded in the Americas, were 636 more people were reported killed by swine flu, bringing the region's death toll to 4,175, the UN agency said.

Fatal cases in Europe also climbed to at least 281, while those in Asia-Pacific rose to 1,070.

"In the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere, influenza transmission continues to intensify, marking an unusually early start to winter influenza season in some countries," said the WHO.

Ukraine confirmed its first swine flu deaths, prompting Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko to order schools and cinemas closed and ban public gatherings for three weeks to contain the spread of the virus.

The government will also introduce "special regimes" to limit the movement of Ukraine's citizens from one region to another for non-urgent purposes, she said. Ukraine has borders with four EU countries.

The prime minister's tough actions came as Ukraine confirmed four deats from the A(H1N1) virus, amid a growing panic over several dozen unexplained deaths in the west of the country.

"We can say today that Ukraine has entered into the zone of the swine flu epidemic," Health Minister Vassyl Kniazevich said.

In the United States, the virus may have infected up to 5.7 million over the first four months of the outbreak, according to a study by the government's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The figure is more than 100 times the number of cases confirmed in laboratories.

The researchers estimated that between 1.8 million to 5.7 million cases of A(H1N1) flu occurred in the United States in the four months from April, when the virus was first reported.

Of those cases, between 9,000 and 21,000 were hospitalised, the study said.

"We have been saying that we were just finding the tip of the iceberg with our laboratory confirmed reporting," Anne Schuchat, the director of the national center for immunisation and respiratory diseases, told reporters.

The A(H1N1) virus has also spread in European football leagues, just days after the French first division clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille was postponed after three Parisian players were diagnosed with swine flu.

Spanish second division team Real Betis, based in Sevilla, has requested that its game on Sunday be postponed after 13 players became sick with swine flu.

The virus has also made its way into the English Premiership where Blackburn Rovers and Bolton reported that players and staff had contracted it.

Countries in the northern hemisphere have been arming themselves with swine flu vaccines for the winter months.

The WHO said experts concluded after a meeting this week that a single dose of swine flu vaccine would provide sufficient immunity against A(H1N1).

These vaccines were found to be safe for usage by pregnant women and can also be administered alongside seasonal flu vaccines, according to conclusions drawn from the meeting.

While clinical data was limited on the effects of vaccination on children under the age of 10, the WHO said countries should give a single dose to as many children as possible rather than vaccinating only half of the young population with two shots each.

NEWS FLASH! Highest epidemic of swine flu in Ukraine!
MIGnews.com.ua
Health Minister Vasyl Knyazevych reported that 31 samples were taken from sick people in order to determine whether they fall under the diagnosis of swine flu, of which 11 cases have been confirmed. "It is the interpretation of the result," - he said, adding that on 29 October in Ukraine, 951 people were hospitalized with acute respiratory infections and influenza. As for 30 cases of death, recorded from 19 to 29 October, he reported that the sample was taken only in one case, and the diagnosis was confirmed (A (H1N1)).

Since October 29 the Lviv Region prohibited excursions by bus in connection with influenza and acute respiratory viral infections, the chief sanitary doctor of the Lviv Region Roman Pavlyv reported.

An epidemic of high pathogenic influenza A/H1N1 has begun when it became cold in the country, Health Minister of Ukraine Vasyl Knyazevych claimed. He reported that yesterday, on October 29 in Ternopil, the conference took place with the participation of leading experts. "According to preliminary results, we note that Ukraine has entered into the global pandemic zone, and (the country) Californian epidemic of influenza, or influenza A/H1N1 started. Preliminary analysis of samples taken from ill people and who went to the hospital confirms this diagnosis," - said Vasily Knyazevych.

Vasily Knyazevych called on the population of Ukraine not engage in self-treatment, and go to hospital, UNIAN reports. "People died because they did not apply in time for doctors. The patients called the doctor at 5-7 days of illness, when it was impossible to help people" - the Minister said, assuring that Ukraine has enough drugs to treat this type of flu. Vasily Knyazevych assured that our doctors are competent in these matters.

Today it became known about the death of five people Drohobycz and district. They died as a result of unknown virus, which caused lightning and severe form of pneumonia that is usually impossible to have physicians from Drohobycz, which have more than 20 and 35 years of service. Both doctors said that is not observed in their practice cases such swift action of the virus, which could not resist the strongest antibiotics. According to their data, the lungs of the dead were so impressed if they suffered from chronic pneumonia, and most of the dead were young people.

Today President of Ukraine has appealed to the Prime Minister to ensure the allocation of state budget funds in the necessary volumes for the establishment of a permanent monitoring of the spread of influenza viruses, including influenza A/H1N1, and to ensure proper functioning of the virology laboratory of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service of Ukraine and health institutions in all regions of Ukraine.

An unknown viral infection seems to intensify its attack on the residents of the Transcarpathian Region. We recently released information about the death of a 40-year-old resident of Mezhhirya from infection in Volovets and hospitalization of another resident of the Transcarpathian Region to the regional infectious diseases hospital in Uzhhorod. Today MIGnews.com.ua correspondent in Uzhhorod learned about two new cases of deadly disease - in Hustka Region of Transcarpathia.

There is a lack of flu masks in drugstores of Kyiv. According to statements of employees of pharmacies, it is over. "All masks that we had in stock already are sold out, and we do not have new ones," - said the head of one of the pharmacies.

She stressed that flu masks are not produced in Ukraine, and purchased mainly in China. And as no one expected that people would need in larger quantities than usual orders, nobody did additional purchases, UNIAN reported.

The meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has been convoked. The Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said: In connection with epidemic of influenza A (H1N1) (Influenza California), the government has decided to impose quarantine in nine regions of Ukraine, namely: in Transcarpathia, Khmelnitsky, Rivne, Chernivtsi, Volyn, Vinnitsa, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil Regions. The movement of people between the regions and abroad –may be under special control - it may be limited due to the epidemiological situation, Yulia Tymoshenko warned.

As a reminder, on October 28 flu epidemic in the Ternopil Region, which had appeared a week ago, mowed down nearly 10,000 of residents. Moreover - unknown virus has already killed seven people. Ministry of Health has confirmed 20 deaths from pneumonia in Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv Regions.
A closed meeting has been held in Ivano-Frankivsk, at which participants agreed that epidemic of the so-called "pneumonic plague" is being spread throughout Ukraine. But the problem is its form is unknown, it is ATYPICAL nobody knows how to treat it.

Member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Health Lilia Hrihorovich (Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense faction) is convinced of the necessity to declare the state of emergency in five regions of Ukraine.

As 81,000 are diagnosed with flu in Ukraine and over 2,000 hospitalised, Poland’s health authorities are monitoring the outbreak carefully and ready to tale emergency measures.

The Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS) is monitoring Polish-Ukrainian border crossings. “People who are travelling to Ukraine are being informed about the flu hazard and instructed how to protect themselves against it,” says Tomasz Miszczak from GIS.

Ukraine’s health minister has announced a state of emergency after thirty-three people died from an unknown flu virus in western Ukraine, near the Polish border.

Almost 1000 people, mainly from the Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv Regions, infected with the virus have been hospitalized, including almost 500 children. Hundreds of people have been referred to medical centres and clinics with flu symptoms.

Earlier, Poland’s health hinister, Ewa Kopacz, announced that Polish-Ukrainian border crossings might be closed if the flu virus turns out to be dangerous for Poles. She added that at the moment there is no need to do this.

Border traffic is getting heavier as Poles visit their relatives’ graves in Ukraine to celebrate All Saints’ Day.

A recently-instituted Ukrainian ban on public gatherings to halt a swine flu outbreak could place upcoming football matches with Inter Roma and the Greek national side in jeopardy, a senior government official said Friday.

'Everything that concerns football leagues, there will be discussions and certain consultations,' said Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, at a Kiev press conference.

Ukrainian officials Tuesday morning announced the probable deaths of 11 persons to the swine flu virus.

Among other disease control measures, Tymoshenko ordered a three- week nationwide ban on all 'massed gatherings.'

Were the ban to be fully enforced, two upcoming international matches to be played in Ukraine would become impossible.

On November 4, Dynamo Kiev are scheduled to play Inter Milan in the Champions League while 10 days later Ukraine meet Greece in a World Cup playoff.

The public gathering order would apply to events such as political demonstrations and rock concerts, but whether or not football matches should take place during the ban would be a decision for sports and health officials, Tymoshenko said, according to an Interfax news agency report.

The Dynamo-Inter Group F match is scheduled to be played in the Ukrainian capital Kiev.

The Greece-Ukraine game, the first of a two-game playoff, is scheduled to be played in the eastern city of Donetsk.

Swine flu deaths thus far have been confirmed only in Ukraine's western regions, but a chance of the virus spreading is significant, Tymoshenko said.

Schools nationwide will remain closed for three weeks as another protective measure, she said.

The above video still is calling it a "mysterious virus" and puts out the standard "only X number has been confirmed".

I think the above is referencing hospitalized patients.
