Ukraine considers quarantine after first H1N1 death

KIEV, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Ukraine confirmed its first death from H1N1 swine flu on Friday and officials said that a quarantine could be introduced to halt the spread of the virus.

An outbreak of flu and pneumonia has killed 30 people in western Ukraine since mid-October, but officials have until now insisted this was not the H1N1 strain.

"So far, not all the dead were tested (for H1N1)," a health ministry spokeswoman said. "However, tests on one dead (person) proved positive."

"We are considering a quarantine not only in the west, but also across the country because the virus is spreading very fast," Health Minister Vasyl Knyazevych told a news conference, without giving details. (Reporting by Pavel Polityuk, writing by Oleg Shchedrov; Editing by Dominic Evans)

Health Ministry: Swine flu epidemic starts in Ukraine (update)

Today at 12:37 | Interfax-Ukraine
An epidemic of the A/H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu, has started in Ukraine, Health Minister Vasyl Kniazevych announced at a press conference on Friday.

"Unfortunately, we have to state that an A/H1N1 flu epidemic has in fact started in Ukraine," he said.

The Health Ministry is planning to impose quarantine throughout Ukraine, he said responding a question from Interfax-Ukraine.

"We are considering the possibility of introducing quarantine not only in the western regions but throughout the country because the virus is spreading extremely fast," he said.

Kniazevych said that the Health Ministry would introduce quarantine in kindergartens, schools and in crowded places.

The minister said that it is impossible to find out whether all of 30 people who died of respiratory infections lately actually had the A/H1N1 virus.

"We can only say that 30 people have died during the epidemic," he said.

He also said that 21 specimens had been sent for laboratory tests to the Central Institute of Contagious Diseases in Kyiv, which has confirmed seven cases of the A/H1N1 virus. Out of 12 specimens sent to the Central Sanitary and Epidemiological Station, four proved positive for the A/H1N1 virus.

A total of 951 people have been hospitalized so far, Kniazevych said.

He said that it is virtually impossible to control the spread of the flu because it is an airborne infection.

He said Ukraine will address the World Health Organization and other international organizations for assistance in combating the epidemic of swine flu in its territory.

As reported, thirty-four people, including one child, have died of acute respiratory infections in Ukraine over the last 11 days since October 19, according to the health ministry.

Twelve people died in Lviv region, including a child, twelve in Ternopil region, and six in Ivano-Frankivsk region.

In addition, deaths have been registered in Chernivtsi, Rivne and Zakarpattia regions.

Thank you for posting. I am hopeful, and I am sure everyone else is too, that the quarantines will be effective in considerably slowing the spread of flu in the Ukraine. It seemed to be helpful in Mexico City at the beginning of this pandemic.

31.10.2009 - Yesterday the Ukraine declared an emergency and imposed that schools close for 3 weeks, major events, concerts and cinemas are banned. Neighboring country Belarus responded by tightening border controls.
There are fears the flu could spread. Currently, 80,000 people are infected in the Ukraine, 2,500 people are in hospitals, 35 people have died.
Even in faraway Moscow more and more people are wearing mouth guards. In Russia there are 2 deaths, and 2,000 registered cases. Even at the end of the world ", the volcanic Kamchatka peninsula, 32 cases of swine flu were registered.

Sorry for terrible quality of a Google translation yet please be aware of differences between local and international news linked to Ukrain swine flu outbreak. As far as I am concerned, news agencies, both Russian and Ukrainian, translates into English only a part of information available for local residents, so when you use a english version of these sites, some news might be missed or an assess to full texts might require a subscription.

Ukraine calls for help fighting swine flu
By admin
Created 01/11/2009 - 21:17

Ukraine made an urgent appeal to world powers for help battling swine flu on Sunday, after 60 people died from respiratory problems in a week.

President Viktor Yushchenko wrote to the United States, the European Union, NATO and Ukraine's neighbours to ask for drugs and equipment to fight the spread of the A(H1N1) virus, according to a statement released by his office.

"The threat weighing on Ukraine's national security which we cannot fight alone forces me to ask our close friends and strategic partners for urgent help," Yushchenko wrote.

Ukraine has also ordered 16 tonnes of antiviral drug Tamiflu from Switzerland, the president's office said.

The health ministry said 60 people had died from respiratory problems in the past week, without indicating how many had succumbed to H1N1.

The former Soviet republic has so far reported four fatalities from more than 190,000 cases of swine flu, with nearly 8,000 needing hospital treatment.

Poland and Slovakia responded to Yushchenko's appeal on Sunday night, sending protective masks and supplies of Tamiflu.

Swine flu has become a political issue in Ukraine as the country gears up for January's presidential election.

Both Yushchenko and his rival, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, have tried to take the lead in managing the crisis prompted by the epidemic.
