A Salt Lake County woman between the ages of 18 and 39 has become the 18th person in the state to die from the H1N1 flu virus, the Utah Department of Health reported Wednesday.
She did not have any underlying health conditions, said Pam Davenport, spokeswoman for the Salt Lake Valley Health Department. No other information about the death was released.
Meanwhile, a total of 302 people have been hospitalized with the flu, an increase of only two hospitalizations since the department's last H1N1 report Aug. 19.
Children, especially those between ages 5 and 14, continue to be hardest hit. That age group has made up 17.4 percent of all confirmed cases in the state...

Since the beginning of September, the deaths of three Utah women have been linked to the H1N1 swine flu and 127 Utahns have been hospitalized.

And Utah's rate of influenza-like illness, as assessed by the state Health Department, has been above the "outbreak" level for the second consecutive week, officials announced Wednesday.

"If you think of an outbreak occurring on a bell-shaped curve, we appear to be at the base of what could be a steep climb to the peak," said Rachel Herlihy, the department's deputy state epidemiologist.

The women were from Salt Lake, Utah and Weber counties. These are the first deaths to occur in the 2009-10 flu season.

The severity of Utah's cases does not appear to have changed -- instead, more people are becoming ill with H1N1 flu, so more are developing severe illnesses, state officials explained.

Each of the state's 12 local health departments is setting its own policy for distributing the limited supply of H1N1 vaccine in the state. Generally, only certain age groups currently qualify for vaccination.

"It makes the most sense for us to vaccinate those who are high risk first," said Gary Edwards, executive director of the Salt Lake Valley Health Department. "We hope the public will be patient, understanding that over the next few weeks we should have enough vaccine to start immunizing everyone who falls into a priority group."

Another Utahn with the swine flu has died and some patients in the Park City area who have contracted the illness have required intensive care.
"We have had a few patients with swine flu who have required hospitalization," said Dr. Kris Kemp, the director of the Park City Medical Center Emergency Department. "We've had patients who have been transferred out to other ICUs because we don't have an ICU in this facility."

With the swine flu spreading, some Utah schools are holding off closures until absences spike, but the Murray School District may be on its way.

According to Dr. Pat O'Hara, director of support services for Murray school district, 68 students and four faculty members have been confirmed to have the H1N1 virus.

Along with other districts, Murray has not issued any closures.

As the H1N1 and seasonal flus continue to spread throughout the Beehive State, five more Utahns have died and scores of others have been hospitalized in the past week after contracting the flu.

The Utah Department of Health's newest report, released Wednesday, shows eight total deaths associated with the H1N1 virus since Sept. 1 — five more than the department reported a week ago. It also reported that 274 people have been hospitalized after contracting either H1N1 or the seasonal flu — more than double the 127 reported to date last week.

Two of the deaths were in Davis County, both females, one age 50-64 and another 65 or older. Two deaths were reported in Salt Lake Valley — a male age 25-39 and a female age 65 or older — and one in the Tri-County health district (Daggett, Duchesne and Uintah counties), a male age 25-49.

Tom Hudachko, spokesman for the state health department, said the rate of flu in Utah at this point is "already about what our average peak is, about 5.4 percent of the population, and it's only mid-October."

"We're at least two months ahead of when we normally see the peak of the flu season, and you never know when you're at the peak until you've passed it and can look back to see the numbers falling," Hudachko said. Health officials don't anticipate that will happen for some time, he said.

Four more Utahns have died from health problems associated with the the swine flu in the past week.

Health officials say a total of 12 deaths have been related to swine flu in Utah this year.

4 more deaths have been reported since last week's update. One was a woman over 65 years old in Salt Lake County. Two young women under 24 years old died, one from southwestern Utah and the other in Utah County. A man between 25 and 49 years old died in the Weber-Morgan Health District more than a week ago, but was not reported until this week.

Health department reports one more death from H1N1

Quote:
Northern Utah health officials reported their fourth fatality in the last month from the H1N1 virus -- the latest death within the reporting period being a woman living in the Weber-Morgan Health District.

The Wednesday death of Diane Pugmire, attributed to bacterial pneumonia with complications from H1N1, was not within the reporting period.

The Utah Public Health Department released a report Wednesday that notes a total of 12 deaths related to Pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) since Aug. 30, the beginning of the flu season. That is four more deaths than reported last week.

Diane Pugmire died Wednesday of bacterial pneumonia after being named Educator of the Year earlier in the month by the Utah Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development.

The award recognized the 52-year-old Pugmire and Weber math instructor Dixie Blackinton for their success in showing educators how to teach math.

Family members say Pugmire taught classes Monday, but was taken by ambulance to the hospital late that night after having trouble breathing.

A popular Weber State University mathematics instructor has apparently died of bacterial pneumonia with complications from the novel H1N1 influenza.

Diane Pugmire, 52, died Wednesday.

The Weber-Morgan Health Department would only confirm that a female, age 40-64, had died from complications from H1N1 this week and not specifically Pugmire, per their policy.

The Weber State Signpost student newspaper reported Friday that Pugmire's family had received notification from the health department that she died from H1N1 complications.
