Schools in the Waterloo area said Tuesday that just as health officials warned, the H1N1 virus has meant an early start to the flu season.
Waterloo schools are reporting a 22 percent absentee rate for East High School on Monday due to flu-like illness. One elementary school reported 13 percent absent, followed by an 11 percent absentee rate at a second elementary school.
In Cedar Falls, one elementary school reported 10 percent of its students were absent.

St. Joseph’s Catholic School on Des Moines’ east side is closed the rest of the week after an outbreak of flu and flu-like symptoms kept nearly half the school’s 190 students home today, school officials confirmed.

School officials said the school at 2107 E. 33rd St. does not have a confirmed case of H1N1. However, doctors have said the majority of flu this fall is the H1N1 virus.

“We decided this was the best thing we could do to get people well,” Principal Phyllis Konchar said.

The school is scheduled to reopen Monday and continue to observe procedures recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, she said.

The school is the first in Polk County to close due to the recent flu outbreak. Schools statewide have reported high absentee rates due to the flu and H1N1. Waterloo East High School, for example, reported 22 percent of its students absent Monday.

The Ames Community School district reported more than 400 children absent today, a number representing nearly 10 percent of district enrollment.

School officials said the total includes absences for reasons other than illness, but the vast majority of students stayed home because of flu-like symptoms.

Fellows Elementary School reported 140 of its 470 students absent today, compared to 90 yesterday.

Principal Carol Page said staff and teachers have “dropped everything to respond to the situation.”

Page, along with teachers and other staff, has been assisting the school nurse in checking temperatures and providing comfort measures to children who become ill at school until their parents or caregivers can pick them up.

“We all wear a lot of different hats every day, but our first priority is taking care of these children,” she said.

Page said parents can help school administrators and staff by providing up-to-date emergency contact information.

"It's especially important to offer an alternate contact in case a parent is not available," she said.

Other elementary schools in Ames reported absentee numbers ranging from 10 at Sawyer to 34 at Meeker.

Ames Middle School reported 97 out of 978 students absent, and Ames High School tallied 83 absent out of about 1,400 students.

WEST BURLINGTON -- West Burlington Elementary School will be closed Friday due to a a flu bug that has infected more than 40 percent of the students and 30 percent of the teaching staff.

Superintendent Jim Sleister said the decision was made at the end of the day Thursday when it became apparent there wouldn't be enough teachers to staff the school

Student absences from flu-like symptoms rapidly increased this week in the Iowa Quad-Cities, signaling a possible outbreak of the H1N1 virus, Scott County health officials said.

In Scott County, four schools have reported having 10 percent or more of their students absent for at least one day since Oct. 5, according to Scott County Health Department figures. They include:

Riverdale Heights in the Pleasant Valley School District had a 11 percent to 15 percent daily absenteeism rate between Oct. 5 and Tuesday. The school enrolls about 650 students.

Pleasant Valley Junior High School reported 17 percent of its 600 students were out sick Monday. It has seen a decline during the week, although by Thursday 11 percent of students were absent, said Debbie Menke, the school's dean of students.

Wood Intermediate School in the Davenport School District Monday reported a 10 percent absenteeism rate, which had continued through Thursday. It enrolls about 650 students.

Grant Wood Elementary School in Bettendorf had 11 percent and 12 percent of its 375 students absent Oct. 5 and Oct. 6, respectively.

Figures for schools in the Illinois Quad-Cities were not available Thursday.

A majority of the absent students reported having flu-like symptoms, including sore throats, coughing, fever and headaches. However, few have confirmed cases of H1N1 or any other strain of the flu, because medical workers test only hospitalized individuals. Instead, health and school officials rely on the symptoms parents report to track the illness.

Jackie Hall, spokeswoman with the Scott County Health Department, said typically schools don't see double-digit absenteeism rates until late December, when flu season normally hits. Several area principals said they usually have 5 percent of their students absent at this time of year.

"It's kind of a trigger point that indicates there is possibly some kind of an outbreak," Hall said.

Statewide, the number of influenza-related absences is also on the rise. The Iowa Department of Public Health reported Thursday that 56 schools in 23 counties had at least 10 percent of their students absent Monday.

Illnesses cause absenteeism at Lake Mills schools

LAKE MILLS — Influenza-like symptoms have hit the Lake Mills Community School. Around 12 to 13 percent of the student population was absent Tuesday, said Daryl Sherman, superintendent.

The reported illnesses varied from bronchitis to sore throats but the majority have been flu-like.

MASON CITY — More North Iowans have been visiting area clinics with influenza-like symptoms.

Nicolle Amos, a registered nurse practitioner with North Iowa Family Health Care, has seen an increase in patients with coughs and fevers but none of them have tested positive for regular seasonal influenza or H1N1.

“The bad thing is people are still going to work sick,” she said. “Do not go to work when you have a fever.”

In Fort Dodge, only Duncombe Elementary School has reported an absence rate higher than 10 percent in two consecutive days, according to Marcy Harms, director of student services for the Fort Dodge Community School District...

"People have a heightened awareness (with the new strain)," Prescott said. "It's not an airborne illness, so just because somebody coughs doesn't mean the whole room will get it. It is droplet-based, so there has to be direct contact with the germs. We can prevent some of that with good handwashing. covering your mouth and the biggest thing is we need to stay home when we're sick."

Do they hire these guys based on the inverse of their intelligence?

ISU Sees Spike In Sick Students

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University officials said Monday that they're seeing a spike in the number of sick students on campus.
Iowa State is not testing every case to confirm if its the H1N1 flu, but judging from the number of sick students visiting the student health center they said the flu is spreading fast.

Most students and staff have not been able to get an H1N1 vaccine because of the limited supply and the new guidelines that no longer include college-age students; the cut off is age 18.

"We wish everyone would have that availability to get H1N1 right now, but we know that we're doing the tired approach sticking with the CDC guidelines and doing the best we can," said Penni McKinley, with the Thielen Student Health Center at ISU.

The flu is not only spreading through the dorms and off-campus housing, but after Saturday's win in Lincoln Coach Paul Rhoades also indicated that the football team has been hit with illness.

With children back in school, Iowa’s flu season could worsen
At least 151 Iowans hospitalized with flu complications in last week of December

More and more Iowa flu cases have been reported, and officials say the seasonal outbreak could get even worse now that children are back in school.

The Des Moines Register reports that at least 151 people were hospitalized for flu complications in Iowa during the last week of December. The Iowa Department of Public Health says that during the last week of December 2011, public health officials didn’t record any flu hospitalizations.

Department medical director Patricia Quinlisk said Monday that she doubts the tide of illnesses will ebb soon. Quinlisk says the flu incidences show “all the hallmarks of a relatively bad and prolonged flu season.”

She says people who traveled during the holidays were exposed to viruses that quickly could be spread by children who have resumed classes.
