Swine flu victim was on annual leave from AIB's anti-fraud unit
A BANK official who had been off work on annual leave has emerged as Ireland's second swine flu victim. At Billy Graham's removal last night, family and mourners heard praise and thanks for the nurses and doctors who treated him for his illness. Mr Graham, who was from Castleknock, Dublin, died surrounded by his family in Beaumont Hospital on Monday after a short illness. A single man, Mr Graham was in his late 40s to early 50s and worked in AIB's anti-money laundering unit. It is understood he had been in hospital for a number of days and was one of the patients being treated in intensive care. His death notice said he had died peacefully after a short illness, surrounded by his family.

About 1,800 people were diagnosed with human swine flu in the last week, the Department of Health confirmed this evening.

Figures revealed between August 10th and 16th the rate of diagnoses in the community was 42.2 per 100,000 - up from 32.5.

But Dr Devlin stressed this figure was still well below the normal winter flu rates which peaked at 120 per 100,000 last season.

TWO WOMEN have died in the last week after contracting the H1N1 swine flu virus, the Department of Health has confirmed.

The women, both adults from the west and east of the country, had underlying medical conditions and most likely contracted the virus in the community, deputy chief medical officer Dr John Devlin said.

The fatalities bring the number of deaths from swine flu in the State to four.

Swine flu virus believed responsible for Colaiste Ide closure

Reports have emerged that the girls private secondary (and boarding) school Coláiste Íde in Baile an Ghoilín, which is located aproximately five miles west of Dingle in the West Kerry Gaeltacht, has been closed due to an outbreak of swine flu. While the HSE have yet to offically confirm whether or not the Swine Flu virus is responsible, local GP Dr. Michael O Fionnain spoke out on Radio Kerry today about the closure, describing it as a 'public health matter', adding that the pupils in question have been sent back to their respective homes across the country. Several swabs taken from students at the school with suspected cases of the virus have returned positive yet the HSE have been less than forthcoming in their statements on the matter even though it is believed to be one of the biggest incidence of swine flu so far in the country. The following statement on the matter was released by the HSE today:"The HSE has been notified of a number of cases of influenza like illness in several schools, including a residential school in Co. Kerry. The HSE issued guidance for residential educational institutions in preparing for and managing Pandemic (H1N1) influenza (Swine Flu), to the Department of Education in August and this was passed on by the Department to schools, including boarding schools. The HSE’s Public Health Department were advised yesterday (5th October 2009) that the school had made the decision to close for logistical reasons. The school has not closed on public health grounds on the advice of the HSE." Colaiste Ide closed its doors yesterday for a week; it's the first school or college forced to close because of the H1N1 strain.
It's believed that up to 60 of the 140 pupils at the all-girls Irish speaking boarding school have suffered swine flu like symptoms in the past week; however none of them are seriously ill.

Swine flu cases continue to rise sharply - 226 people now hospitalised across the country

A total of 229 people have now been admitted to hospital with swine flu, according to the latest HSE figures – an increase of 46 on last week's numbers. The news comes as the HSE continues preparations to vaccinate people around the country against the virus. Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan said the rate of influenza-like illnesses being detected amongst young people was a cause of concern. “In some younger people we know that the rate is running at about 135 per week, which is an increase from about 50 on the previous week in children up to the age of four.” “In children between five and fourteen it runs at about 140 so you can see that it is quite a spread of infection among younger people.” Confirmed cases of Swine Flu are also continuing to rise in Kerry - Farranfore-based Doctor Eamon Shanahan, says that he and other GPs have seen a doubling of cases of the virus in the past three weeks. Last monday, the girl's private boarding school in West Kerry, Colaiste Ide, was also closed due to an outbreak of swine flu.
